$61,003.24 is the total so far of my hospital charges, does not include about $400 of prescription meds.

waiting on the insurance company to tell me how much of that i will owe. and this does not include some ongoing costs (LifeVest rental, basically a wearable defibrillator that i wear 24/7 until i get a pacemaker), nor the coming cost of the pacemaker surgery (December is the next open date).

FWIW, $63K is lower than I thought it'd be. I was thinking along the lines of $90K. You should owe only your deductible, but read the hospital charges closely. I found out that I was charged $98 for a low-dose aspirin. BCBS paid it all, and they acted like they didn't know what to do with the hospital refund checks they received because of my scrutiny of the charges.

I was in for basically the same thing you were for four days and mine was more than that. Mine was a litle over $70K.

if my gross margin making a cutting board is $100 (i'll keep this a hobby to steer clear of the tax man), i'd need to make about 610 cutting boards, and sell them, to pay that amount off. if i can make 3 a week, then that would take me 203+ weeks, or just under 4 years of constant work......let's go to plan B.....

Hey Doug,
Ease back into the cutting board business. No use "wasting" your new start by working your ass off.

Don't stress the bills, let the insurance company handle it. My wife's 30 radiation treatments were almost $70K and it was only $2K out of pocket

2 years ago, I was in a similar situation.
4 separate hospitizations, 1 at 3 days, the other 2 were 1 day stays.
My deductible is $2,500, with out of pocket exspenses up to $2,500 also. Add in co-pays ($500.00 each time I was admitted), plus all the Dr/lab/med charges, it ended up costing me $7,000.
Total bills exceeded $100k, so factoring in my premium payments of $5K/yr, I paid out 10% of the total.
Last year was 1 hospitization, plus my youngest son had some exspensive tests done. Another $7K I'd paid out, plus the premiums.
$24K gone.
My butt hurts (not hospital treatment related), but at least I'm here to bitch about it.

Reading this I'm thankful I have good health insurance with premiums paid by my employer... no deductables, 800 max paid out of pocket per year. Guess I shouldn't have been bitching when my share of a day long er visit was 200 including the rx I had.
