Normally the real cold weather only lasts a few days to a week and then it warms up a bit. And then it may get colder for a few days and then warm up again. I can handle a few days of cold, but the negative temps are a bit more severe than I can tolerate. During the last twelve years, we have received deeper and more frequent snowfalls than when I was a kid. I was eleven years old in '71.

After today's six inches of snow, I am hoping warmer weather is around the corner. I am a shorts and t-shirt type guy.

Associated Press photojournalist Horst Faas took this iconic photo on June 18, 1965, during the Vietnam War, while with the 173rd Airborne Brigade defending the airstrip at Phouc Vinh in South Vietnam.

The soldier's identity remained unknown for many decades, until recently when he was identified as Larry Wayne Chaffin from St. Louis. He served with that brigade in Vietnam for exactly one year beginning in May 1965 when the photo was taken he was 19.

Chaffin had many problems readjusting to civilian life after returning from the war. He died at the age of 39 due to complications from diabetes, a disease he may have contracted due to exposure to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam. He died in 1985.

What is striking is that look. if we take that face and cut it out from the rest, it could be an amused smile of any 19 year old boy ... but if we add the rest, that light-heartedness disappears and that smile communicates more.

Oh my goodness! Try calling the nurse’s station. We got more info from being super nice to the unit secretary who answered and let us talk to his nurse when my dad was in the hospital. We never even talked to the hospital dr. It’s infuriating!

Hospitals have either forgotten or don't give a rat's ass that mental health is as important as physical health. When I had my major surgery last summer they said I'd be in the hospital 3-4 days. When I found out the morning after surgery that Kathy wasn't allowed to see me for any reason I told them I was leaving. After heated arguments they wheeled me out to her car and I left. Probably not the smartest thing I've ever done, but these No Visitor policies are just stupid and irrational.

Good luck and hope she heals up fast.

When I had that botched surgery last year they allowed my wife to stay in my room until we left the next morning. Hospitals have different policies. Some patient/family friendly and others not so.

My MIL came back from the hospital last night. She seems to be doing well so far. I know 5 broken ribs has to be hard to deal with. She did seem to quiet down when her son told her he was looking for a nursing home for her. All the whining just stopped.

I know a family that just had a baby Feb. 3rd.

• They both entered the hospital Wed. morning the 3rd, stayed all day and had baby, man spent the night that night.
• He went home Thur. morning (4th), showered, grabbed clothes, etc...
• Went back to hospital Thur. afternoon, spent the night again.
• Friday the 5th rolls around, they're still there, and woman's daughter visits. The dad leaves with step daughter Friday evening.
  Mom and baby stays because newborn needed more time.
• Dad comes back to hospital Sat. morning, stays all day, and they leave Sat. evening.
