That's a solid point. Apex makes an excellent point as well: Some of the best storytellers work with Disney. To me that's what made the original movies work so well.

The last 4 years have been pretty damn good. By Christmas we'll have had 100 half-hour episodes of, IMHO, the best Star Wars since 1980. If these new movies are as good as The Clone Wars is, we're good to go.

Lucas biographer Dale Pollack has been mouthy today...
It's not the novels. Pollack claims the skeleton of the story comes from George's "notes" circa the mid-80's when he briefly considered continuing to make Star Wars movies. It is a new story, based around Luke "in his 30's or 40's" after" the events of Return Of The Jedi. If true that pretty much means a recasting of the main gang. Pollack also says "these ones are the most exciting." |

Apparently Mark Hamill is the world' greatest keeper of secrets. Lucas told him about the new movies last year...

Now that the shock has subsided a bit, people are actually thinking about this news and putting things together...
One bit of speculation centers around the idea that Damon Lindelhof (TV's Avatar: The Last Airbender, 2009's Star Trek) and Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) have already been working on Star Wars Episode VII, with Bird set to direct. Here is how the timeline works... Spring 2011 - Lucas shows Bob Iger at Disney how to use a lightsaber, and so began discussions of a deal that would eventually become the sale of Lucasfilm. Chicago Tribune-October 30, 2012 June 2011 - Lindelhof signs seven-figure deal with Disney to develop, write and produce a "tentpole sci-fi action film" with "cross media/theme park/merchansdising opportunities". The film is called 1952, and nothing else is known. Deadline-June 9, 2011 Summer 2011 - Mark Hamill: "He did tell us last summer about wanting to go on and do [Episodes] VII, VIII, and IX, and that [newly appointed Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy would be doing them." At this point Kennedy had not yet been announced as Lucasfilm co-chair. Entertainment Weekly-October 31, 2012 May 2012 - Brad Bird is hired to direct 1952 and brings onto the project Jeff Jensen author of the graphic novel The Green River Killer. Deadline-May 3, 2012 June 2012 - Kathleen Kennedy is named co-chair of Lucasfilm. Deadline-June 1, 2012 June 2012 - Lucasfilm archivist/blogger Pablo Hidalgo is brought into the project to assist Lucas in creating the story treatments for the new films and create the guidelines by which writers will work within the Star Wars Universe. This is thought to be how continuity will be continued. Star Wars Official Blog October 2012 - Sale of Lucasfilm to Disney is made official, Kathleen Kennedy named President of Lucasfilm, the new films are officially announced. Deadline-October 30 2012 I have to admit, Lindelhof and Bird would appear to me to be great choices. Is 1952 the next Blue Harvest? I kinda hope so... |

I cannot wait for the new movies. Sure the prequels weren't great, but they were the Star Wars universe. Can't wait for more, if what Apex posted proves true...seems they are in good shape.

New Information...
FirstShowing.net cites an unnamed source "in the know" in debunking the theory that 1952 is a cover for Star Wars Episode VII. Ok, fine, speculation is fun, even when it turns out to be incorrect. So 1952 really is a big tentpole original movie with cross-platform/theme park/merchandising opportunities, coming from Disney, Brad Bird and Damon Lindelhof... bonus. |
