I remember it cheaper than that. 15 cents for a burger and 12 cents for fries. And no indoor seating.
Early 60s. |

I can remember McDonalds having "Throw-Back" sales when I was in my teens. They were selling hamburgers for .29¢ and cheeseburgers for .39¢ If I remember correctly, these were early "1970's" prices so the prices shown in the picture above are right in line with what I remember.

I remember when I was in 6th grade, I'd ride my bike to Mr. Quick for lunch during some school days (heck, they'd let us walk home for lunch my entire time in grade school, you had 45 minutes.) For 53 cents I could get a burger, small fries, and small drink. Most of the time I didn't have 53 cents, and on those days I'd typically go to my friend Todd's grandmother's house for lunch, she made a mean sammich. It was literally across the street from the school, giving us 20+ minutes to mess around on the playground.

In 1955, gas cost 23 cents a gallon. 31 cents in 1965, 55 cents in 1972. Prices look right for any of those time periods.

I remember going on a long road trip with my grandparents, just me and the two of them, we drove from Normal IL down to Texas, through New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and back home. My grandfather several times would drive miles out of our way to get gas for 1 penny cheaper, so instead of 30 cents, it was 29 cents a gallon.

My first real job at 14 was flipping burgers at a place called Harvey's (only) and a burger was .45, shake .25, and fries .25. And if you've ever been they're a LOT better than
MickyDee's anytime. |

I saw the original menu from Old Hickey Barbecue dated 1962. A slab of ribs was 2.25 T-Bone steak 2.00, New3 York strip King size 2.50. I also remember the in the early 60's you could get a hamburger, fries and a drink for 45 cents from McDonalds. And in 1970 a 8 pack of beer for 1.89.

I'd place that at about 1976.
One of the first McDonald's in Toronto opened less than 1 mile from my parent's house in 1973. A Big Mac was 55 cents, and it was at least 2.5 times the size of the crap they serve now. With our taxes included, a Big Mac is $5.74 now! |
