As far as the chief, this is his own admission of conflict/animosity with his superior(s). It was to the point that he carried it with him into retirement and actively campaigned to get the guy fired. This is why I wonder if the retirement was voluntary or 'highly suggested.'

It just doesn't make sense to take early retirement and lose money when taking on the expense of building a new home. That's completely separate from his decision not to go on DROP, which would have netted him a huge lump sum for just a few more years of service.

No idea of specifics, but my MIL took early retirement from a state pension program in Iowa. It is based on age and years of service. "Ruler of 80" comes to mind
I believe his was similar.
He joined the police after high school.
30 yes of service plus being 50 makes one eligible.

I was post #65, and my post had absolutely nothing to do with what was going on in the thread. That gif has been around over a decade, and it is funny. It seems from seeing the news stories and hearing what Jessie said, that it was fabricated by the family to justify his action.
There is no official comment from any police agency that he was diagnosed.

Same here... Was my first thought also.

Never met Dan in person, but for some reason I always liked him..

I never really understood why so many didn't like him, but still, quite a few did like him....

I will certainly not defend his last actions, but want to say this...

He sent me a friend request over there years ago, and to be honest.. I felt good that he thought I was worthy.

That said, the whole thing saddens me.. he was someone we all knew on a daily basis, and to see this happen.... with someone we knew.
