I have over 4 million Marriott points and I use them all the time. I've never received a 1099 for using them. Your SIL is bullshitting you if she said she received a 1099 because she used points, as the use of points is not taxable. Earning points through referrals can be a taxable event.

There are folks here who obviously don't live in NJ. The most obvious example is that I am in a dog food program where after buying 10 bags for $17 + tax each, you get the 11th bag "free". When I get the 11th bag, they charge me $1.13, it's the 6.625% sales tax on the $17 I didn't pay.

There are many other examples. NJ has absolutely NO PROBLEM with charging tax on a financial transaction that never actually happened.

A co worker needed a new phone on travel. We were in CA. He got that deal where it was virtually nothing. But the taxes were on many things, all based off of the phones retail price, not what he bought it for..

Every year I have to tally the value of the items used in my business. My antique desk, chair, computers, printers. Then I pay a county tax on that value, like real estate. Last year it was under $2. It must cost the county ten times that or more to collect it.
