So because your nephew goes to school in the ghetto, the O/P should be afraid to walk around in Rittenhouse Square area, one of Philadelphia's wealthiest neighborhoods?

They are areas of Philadelphia that aren't safe during the day and other parts with no worries at all at night.

It all depends where you are and how you "carry" yourself.

I haven't visited Philadelphia in more than 40 years but my nephew has lived there for more than 2 years now so I trust his assessment. That said, I do have experience with time spent in Boston, New Haven, Atlanta, Macon, Naples Florida and I live in Savannah. I would not go out alone and unarmed in any neighborhood in any largish city these days. The criminals increasingly seem to have figured out that the nicer, more affluent neighborhoods are where the money is likely to be better. I hope you continue to have halcyon days (and nights) wherever you choose to venture out alone.

i worked in philly when it sucked back in the late 80s and early 90s. people took the train in, worked and went back to the suburbs. there were very few bars and restaurants, let alone young people or monied people. these days, there are shit tons of cool places, lots of young people, lots of empty nesters who moved back. I know tons of people who live in the city between the ages of 30 and 50. I will simply hop on a train or drive in, and post a message in our private group to see who is out and about. I feel extremely comfortable walking to wherever they might be in center city. even if walking isn't your thing, uber, lyft and taxis are plentiful.

rittenhouse square is real ballers. a decent condo with bedrooms can easily run 2 million or more. a very high end, up to roughly 8 to 10 million or more. here is a mid range unit for sale. https://www.phillymag.com/property/2...ugh-penthouse/

could somehing bad happen, sure anywhere under the right circumstances.

The trouble would possibly come from a newcomer missing "the sweet spot" by a block or 2. Ever been to New Orleans? Miss the Bourbon Street corridor by a block and Katie bar the door!

Hmm, lets see. Miss by a block or two to the north you are in center city and headed toward fairmount, which is a really fun area with cool bars like Jack's Firehouse, formerly owned by famous chef Jack Mcdavid. Great food and drinks.
Miss to the east, old city, lots of historic places, a brand new mall which used to be the gallery and is now full of high end, name brand stores. Miss to the west, you are at University of Pennsylvania and Drexel, full of little rich college kids. Miss to the south, meh, Graduate hospital area, full of 7-800 dollar row homes and working class people. Ill take my chances.

Well, one thing honestly. Philly used to be a "working class town" where drinks were cheap. With the new infusion of people and the new soda tax, drinks have gotten progressively more expensive. A four dollar pint of Guinness is now between seven and ten depending upon where you go. A vodka water can be upwards of ten bucks. for three drinks I can buy a whole bottle, lol.
