Default Boulder, Co Wildfires??

From what I have read so far, they have not determined the cause of the fires that burned over 1,000 homes. There does not appear to be any large forest areas around Boulder. Why are they still calling it "wildfires"?

The major cause for all the destruction was caused by the 100mph winds. The actual name for a fire causing this much damage is conflagration. Sounds to me like the media is trying to turn this into another climate change excuse.

Combustible homes built close together. What could go wrong?

in 1666, the great fire of London destroyed most of the city. most buildings were built of wood and other combustible materials. the King decreed that going forward, no building would be built out of any material except stone and brick. so it wouldn't happen again.

we learn nothing from the past.

it is possible to build homes that don't burn. metal roofs, concrete siding, fire proof treated lumber.....but we don't do that...

or space them far enough apart that one on fire won't catch the next one on fire....

My Niece and her husband lost their condo. Im not sure if it totally burned to the ground or if it was just damaged but they are staying with her inlaws for now. She is an EMT for Boulder County I believe. Sucks for lots of people there for sure.

I don't have any answers about that but I did have the same question. Tried researching Colorado fire season and they're claiming it is year around, any time there is no snow cover or a current rain storm ongoing.

They had nice weather last time I rode through the area but I felt like a constant target for lightening. The clouds are too damned close!

We're always conscious of it. This particular fire was much different than past fires. It happened at what is called the wildland/urban interface. I would hazard a guess that most folks in the neighborhoods that burned thought that they were immune to a wildfire. The last survey that was done declared about 10% of the area that burned as "unburnable" and the highest risk in these areas was "moderate".

The real problem was 100mph winds and fuel that might have been at about 1% moisture content that got it going. Add to that, most of the structures being so close together had no defensible space for the FD's to even try and make a stand.

a few years ago, our local fire house hosted a seminar on fire defense around your house (the outside). things like keeping pine trees away from your structure, if possible, making your exterior finish and roof fire resistant or fire proof. rule of thumb was keep pines at least 35 feet from your house, and that way, if they catch, they won't spread to your house.

i have one pine behind the guesthouse that is too close, otherwise, we're good.

Good rule. IMO pine burns hotter than other woods. Stoked a campfire with a dead pine stump once and the bark of a maple tree 10 feet away spontaneously combusted. I freaked Put it out using a water jug but was super lucky not to set the woods on fire.

Maybe another climate change excuse or maybe it is just because people understand wildlife not conflagration, a word not used often.

The videos they show of Christmas trees going up in flames are ZERO exaggeration. When I had real trees at Christmas, I'd use the branches to start my fire pit. Amazing amount of fire from very little substance.

My point exactly is WHAT they are calling it and why.... Like I said, the term wildfire fits their narrative better than Conflagration...

In the mountains up here we call pine trees candles.

You keep saying "narrative". I'm here in CO and I have no idea what narrative you speak of. And who is they?

So why is what we call it, a wildfire or a conflagration, a part of the climate change narrative? This has been in the news for days and nobody has talked climate change here in CO. It's a normal thing to have Chinook winds come off the front range every year. We see 70 or 80 every year, and 100 every few years. This is not climate change, this is overdevelopment at the margins. Still hoping they can determine the cause. There are some f'd up people out there.

I am only speculating, but several things come to mind.

1) Wildfire immediately connotes visions of chaos and something beyond control
2) Most wouldn't know what conflagration means but if they did, it is a large fire, but not necessarily out of control
3) Tree huggers DGAS about property, but displace a field mouse and there's hell to pay, Years of abuse by man, created chaos and displaced a mouse. HOW DARE YOU ~Greta T.
4) Sensationalism
