Similar to my situation last year...my AC condenser fins stopped up...took brake line and made an air blower extension...got a quart of fine sand out ! Also...with AC on, the CPU is over-riden and both fans should come on as extra heat is generated...sounds like this may be happening ?

Not exactly. When the fans run, they both run.

In low speed fan operation, the fans are wired in series, such that each motor receives half voltage (6v).

In high speed fan operation, relays switch to wire the fan motors in parallel, so that each sees a full 12v.

Turning the A/C on will command the fans on low speed at speeds below 35 mph, and if the coolant temp is over 185.

In driving Portdawg's car in BG, the temp sensor acted normal, and it was easy to watch it climb and drop incrementally. Not indicative of a bad sensor IMO. I took the car out for a short, slow speed cruise, and temps consistently hung around 230 while moving at ~45mph, which, while within the limits of "normal" temp range, is definitely NOT normal behavior. During extended idle, sure 230 is quite normal. But just cruising at a moderate speed, temps should drop fairly rapidly in the high 190s, and this is what isn't happening on Jim's car. The cooling capacity is greatly diminished.

I would have suspected radiator before water pump, but now that the water pump is changed, that's a moot point.

Hope you get it solved soon.

Tom,

What do you think about air trapped in the crossover tube on the heads (Or in that area)?

Tend to doubt it.

I've never had troubles with air in the system on a C5, never had to burp or bleed one. I have on other vehicles, and when it happens, they overheat quite rapidly in that situation. Your temps climb so very gradually, and even maintain temps at a high (but not overheated) level that I'd say coolant is flowing, but at a greatly diminished pace, and since this happened after a flush, I do suspect the radiator.

Didn't know you recently did a flush. I would have to agree w/Tom.

Sounds encouraging though. Especially if it topped at only that while idling/in traffic.

If you went for an aftermarket like a Dewitt's, that will be much more effective than the stock radiator (in perfect condition) ever was. The fans may not even need to run in all but the most extreme conditions now.

Sucks that it had to be the most expensive component, but hoping you finally got it solved.

Awesome that ya got it fixed Jim! Do you thing the radiator flush might have caused the problem leading to it to fail.

I was thinking about having my radiator flushed....

There are mixed opinions on this. Once I got the radiator out, the fins were pretty gnarly with dirt and grit. It could still be seen through but it sure as heck had a lot of crap stuck in it.

I dunno...
