My trailer has brakes on both axles and I have a load sensing brake controller. The truck will stop just fine w/o the brakes hooked up and it stops like it's not even towing anything with the controller setup correctly. I've been towing with my current trailer since mid 2007 and never once had any issues with the brakes failing. I force the brake pedal down and walk around the trailer making sure all 4 are humming before every tow. |

Keep in mind there was 4 or 5 tires in the bed, and the trailer was a little over 2k and the car is 3300. So lots of weight. The truck did sag a bit, but really not all that much

My old man and I tow stuff with our half-tons all the time. They do a great job for things like cars and smaller boats.
He's also owned Dodge diesels, 454 Duallies, and Detroit Peterbuilts. You get the truck for what you need. Diesel boys sound like they're compensating for something in this thread. |

Serious. I didn't know about the transfer switch or the extra large breaker box until I got it home. Hell, I powered 4 other trailers at our last event from my generator.
Oh yeah, I also added a air compressor and an inside and outside air fitting. I'm really happy with it. |

Ours differ quite a bit. 20ft. 2 small interior lights and a winch, powered by a dead battery. Roof vent won't stay closed. Snowplow beat up the RF corner this winter. Manual jack (which is bent). However, it does have built in drawers and a tire rack at the front. This is what I'd call 'nothing special.' |

Go to Harbor Freight and with a 20 % coupon get the 3500 lb electric jack for $99. It's a back saver. I have a winch as well but I prefer to drive the car in. One of the reasons I got the Grand Sport is the removable top. |

Anyone with a gasser care to try this? It's only 40' long and only weighs a measly 17k fully loaded.

I am so sorry I stepped on so many 1/2 ton egos in here.
I couldn't help but laugh today as I was cruising up a 6% grade towing my boat and listening to the 1/2 ton trucks winding at 4k+ rpm downshifting and shuttering while I cruised on by. |

A couple of simple mods can fix that.....HBoost brakes, maybe upgrade the rotors/pads/calipers if you have to....

Wow. That's a lot cheaper than I was expecting. I had never looked into it. Now I'm adding it to the very long to do list.

They were all 1/2 smallblocks tons with the exception of the 86 which was a 3/4 454. They aren't like a pickup, I have 3/4 ton F-250 5.4 gas motor with solid axles, plow and tow package and it drives like a truck. The Suburbans and Avalanche, especially the late model 5.3, drive like cars. I tow with my 3/4 gas motor and it even though its no diesel, its an excellent tow motor. The torque curve of the 5.4 is flat, we dyno'd it and while no ne was shocked by the HP, they were impressed by the useable torque curve of the motor. For most moderate sized trailers, a properly set up 1/2 ton is going to be OK. It depends on the frequency of the trips, the terrain, etc. We tow a 26' cabin cruiser with the 5.3 Avalanche or the 99 Vortec Suburban all the time, but we are only going about 25 mph from one side of town to the boat ramp and its mostly level. To tow through the mountains on the highway, I would go with a bigger truck. One day we used my buddy Paul's new crew cab Duramaxx/Allison GMC, a clone to your truck, and it ruled. It has stupid pulling power and is definitely what I would use to pull an enclosed car trailer cross country or a big cruiser, but its overkill for my open trailer or my 18' bowrider. Everything is a compromise. While a crew cab diesel is an awesome tow vehicle, it costs almost 40% more than a gas motor truck,it blows as a daily driver, its expensive to fuel, and when it breaks, your f'd in the a. My truck definitely downshifts on grades and in the Berkshire Mountains, it will hold 2nd gear at 4k for a mile or so uphill, but that is what its designed to do.
