That's what we do every year. Totally worth it.

We had a tax lady once.

She may or may not have confused and mixed our information with another client and that may or may not have resulted in an outrageous refund.

I'm not saying that happened but I will say it was about three years before I got a decent night's sleep.

Never again.

Not a "tax lady". A tax attorney. Difference between getting your wisdom teeth pulled by Jethro who has some blacksmithing experience, and a dental surgeon. The guy we use works for a large accounting firm, does a great job. Plus, if your tax situation changed radically like yours did this last year, having a pro do it this time is great because if any mistakes are made, it's on them not you. And then you can go back to doing it yourself. Please don't be that guy who says they can be their own attorney, surely defending themselves in court can't be that hard. This is good advice BTW, but you can do what you want.

The lady made her bed and she can lay in it. I'd go to sleep giggling at her lack of planning for when the tax man cometh and sleep well. Very well.

Nothing that was lost was covered by insurance so she took out the money and paid for all of it that had a balance and bought replacement stuff.

So I am doing our taxes and if I was single going in to the year, I'd get about 1900.00 back. Together, we owe $5964.00...THEN you add in her 401k withdrawal and we owe $22,068.00 !!!

Yeah, I'd love to say "sucks being you" but that tax owed is BOTH of ours. Doesn't matter if she moved out or not.

It's not your problem.

Since your divorce was finalized in 2017, you are now single as far as taxes are concerned.

excerpt from above link

Filing status
Couples who are splitting up but not yet divorced before the end of the year have the option of filing a joint return. The alternative is to file as married filing separately. It's the year when your divorce decree becomes final that you lose the joint return option. In other words, your marital status as of December 31 of each year controls your filing status for that entire year.

If you can't file a joint return for the year because you’re divorced by year-end, you can file as a head of household (and get the benefit of a bigger standard deduction and gentler tax brackets), if you had a dependent living with you for more than half the year, and you paid for more than half of the upkeep for your home

I can come down from the ceiling now. I owe $495.00 because my deduction was for "married" but now I'm filing single. She owes about $19,000 on her own.

WHEW !!

While that may be true, my wife had a lawyer for the divorce. I did NOT have a lawyer for the divorce. I would have, but the one I met with told me I would be stupid to NOT have a lawyer so I walked out.

Without a lawyer:

I kept the house
I kept my vehicle
I kept the furniture
I got $20,000 from her 401k
I got $10,000 debt out of $38,000 total

She:
Living with her dad
No furniture
$28,000 in debt plus an additional $19,000 in taxes due

Not too shabby for both a fool and an idiot.

Yeh, in fact I wish my ex was not after me to be just a sperm doner....as I look back on it, that is ALL the relationship amounted to.....
2 abortions on account of she did not do chemistry, but some IUD crap....then two miscarriages after we married......no comment, just was.....

then two healthy kids, and soon as they on the ground....divorce.....

married to my wife here now for about 6 years longer than the entire relationship with my ex/kids wife.....
