Talk to me about hip replacement
I'm getting one done this coming Tuesday.
Who's had it? How'd it go? How long before walking normally? Most important, how long before you could drive your vette? |

No personal experience here but I know a few people who have had it done, mostly without issues, they literally have done millions to date. The key is to get at least one night in the hospital, don't go the outpatient route I've heard too many issues crop up with those including one person I know who ended up back in the hospital for several days as a result of wound that opened up and the resulting infection.
Walking and therapy starts immediately, the most recent person I know who had it done was about 6 weeks until walking normally. Driving the vette, schedule your surgery for the winter |

I'm 6 weeks after THR on one side. Antero-lateral.
The process will make a difference in your recovery. On a walker for one day. Crutches for 4 days. Cane for another 4 days. Pain is gone. Tightness and instability remain, but are improving with PT and consistent exercise. I'm told that 12 weeks is kind of the target for near-normal. |

Over 50 years ago, my sis/hubby/kids in a VW bug, 2 lane bridge, head on as the swerved to the right against the concrete, he was driving, and got the second hip replacement in history....so they said.....the wreck shoved his femur into the hip socket and shattered it all to crap....
he walked after a few months, and was fine for some years...but the pains were great and he started drinking, and he always did smoke.....cancer on TG day '85 is what got him...... but the surgery went pretty good for many a year, he was 56, come think of it my niece is the age of my WIFE,...65....sis was 13 years older than me..... So I would imagine that 1/2 a century later, things are much better now, so I would say U B fine..... |

Wife carried mail for 20 years. She had L. Hip replaced June 1st. Total bone-on-bone. Her incision was ~ 8" on outside of hip. Discharged the following day only because Medicare required an overnight stay. Doc prohibited driving until she was off pain meds & she had normal reactions, then she could drive (automatic). She was off pain meds ~2 days from hospital release except for additional ~10 days (nights only) for sleep. She then started driving. Used walker ~10 days then used Cain ~10-14 days. After that, used Cain as a security blanket (in public) ~10 days. PM additional questions if you wish. |
