Default ABS/4WD Warning Light Question

2006 Mercury Mariner V6 AWD Automatic (Ford Escape)

My ABS Light has started coming on and along with it the 4WD light.

The lights will be off when the car is started and will come on a few miles down the road.

Service Brake System and Service 4WD System in message center.

The ABS light is steady and the 4WD light flashes 8 times approximately every 40 seconds.

No Codes appear in my code reader. The sensors and harnesses appear okay. Any ideas?

Thanx.

Mark

Not all code readers can check ABS and body control codes -- perhaps try a different scanner?

That's what I'm thinking.

I don't have a Snap On, but it is a good quality scanner.

I'm really hoping I won't end up at the stealership for diagnosis.

All autozones/Advance can scan your CIL <Check Engine Light> But not all of them can scan your other codes. Call around to find one with the better scanner available, they will check the code for free.

Okay. Upon further inspection, it looks like the tone ring on the LF is cracked.

If that doesn't do the trick, I'll let you guys know.

Now, where is the tone ring and what does "LF" stand for?

That's going to be it. I was going to say before paying for diagnosis, visually inspect all wheel speed sensors and wiring because that is usually going to be the problem. But it looks like you already did that and found the problem.

LF is Left Front, and here's a pic showing the electromagnetic (tone) ring and the sensor that monitors it.

It was pretty easy to see that it was cracked once I moved the truck forward enough times to see all of it.

For some reason, I've found that ford products are really weird when it comes to dealing with the ABS. They're tied into everything and a small sensor on the passenger rear of the RV my family had shut that mother down...like it wouldn't run kinda shut down.
