4 cops stormed my house today, guns drawn, with lasers...

The roofing company delivered the tiles today and dropped them off in my driveway. Driver knocked on my front door, dog naturally goes nuts, but the driver claims a voice (older man voice) as clear as a bell came through the door "who is it?". Only problem, NOBODY WAS AT HOME. Driver called my wife's cell and informed her, she immediately called 911, and she took off toward home (15 mins away).

Fast forward, cops called Patty for permission to get into the house, and saw the keypad on the garage, but she was right around the corner, so they waited. She opened it and told her to stay the hell back. They went in and cleared the entire house. ALL doors were locked, and no signs of open drawers or anything like that.

Immediately after my wife called, I logged onto my computer. My office would be a treasure trove for a thief. It was still awake and accepting my connection. WTF? We did have the soffit crew working on the porch today, but supposedly had left 20-30 minutes before the driver knocked.

Driver was a clean cut , young white dude, clearly not impaired. Cops even looked in the attic.

Again, WTF? Maybe the driver heard my bird? Bird makes loud noises when dog barks, but doesn't have any human words. Totally baffled.

My computer was still awake and accepting an external connection from me.....meaning some criminal didn't clean out my office and walk off with $30,000 of computer equipment.

I'm replacing the handle with a keyed lock this weekend. I can, and have, locked it from the inside, but it's one of those pickable locks where you just use a small flat head screw driver to open it up. Typical indoor lock. Not only will I replace the lock, but I'm going to do what I've been meaning to do for a few years and put cameras, both inside and outside, so I can monitor my house remotely. Enough of a wake up call to get off of my ass and do this. We have WAY too much stuff that peeps would want to steal.

A well planted foot takes out any shitrock wall.....I was debating taking out a kitchen wall during a kitchen remodel, a fireman buddy came over to look, and one shot kicked a hole right through both layers of rock......decision made.....

Cameras and whatnot are just there to make you feel better. At best, they are there for after the fact, and rarely actually lead to someone getting caught. Since there are cameras everywhere, thieves have come up with the crazy idea of covering their faces. They know police response times, etc.

Short version, you may prevent some drugged out idiot from doing a smash and grab of a few loose items, but if an actual thief, the kind that would want your computer equipment, really wants your shit, they are going to get it. That's why you have insurance.

Why haven't you already done this? Your desktop and laptop computers can certainly handle the requirements and, as you say, your computers are worth $30K. Make sure that you cover all the exterior doors and windows and it would be worth it to have a camera scanning the garage as well as its entrance to the house.

This is true, and a decent alarm system is your friend. Security cameras are just sorta ancillary. If a thief can bypass your alarm system, the security cameras are only going to have footage of them disguised and flipping you off as they steal your stuff. But you might catch a UPS package thief with one.
