It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.

Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail.
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.

Whatever excuse they made in their head,
Can't justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger dogs get adopted away.

When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face, and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the grey, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond this cage.

You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,
You love me so dearly, you want me to know.

I may have lived most of my life with another,
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give,
To you, my dear person, as long as I live.

I may be with you for a week, or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve.

And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear

Years ago my daughter wanted to get a dog for the kids. They fell in love with a miniature poodle at the shelter, but she was ten years old, and her senior owners had relocated to a convalescent home and could no longer care for her. Against her better judgement, she let the kids talk her into adopting the old dog. She was underweight, bad haircut, etc. (The shelter has convicts working at the shelter and learning dog grooming. Lots of bad hair at the shelter)

The dog got healthy, became a great member of the family, and lived ten more years. Really cool dog and we all loved her. She was deaf and blind the last few years, but died of natural causes at home.

well Bailey has been acting up growling and trying to bite, so we need to keep an eye on him, as for me he has opened his mouth several times not really biting but opening mouth , he has growled at the wife when she doesnt pay attention to him, but he has chased the middle son and acted silly, almost bit a friends kid, and barks at everybody outside, we will make sure he has more time, we love this dog but this may have been the reason the previous owners got rid of him

me and the family have had the dog for more than 8 months, he was a rescue, now i am really starting to see his true colors, he is starting to snap at us once in a while ,and he seems to start to growl a lot, i dont mind the growling but several times he has had my arm in his mouth, not biting but still, i myself usually do not put up with this, and also my eldest is telling me, that he has been acting silly, but the wife loves him, so he is safe for a while, i am wondering maybe the reason the previous owners gave him up was because, he has a attitude problem, what does VB, say?

He should be regarding you and every other member of the family as his alpha, within the pack.

He's starting to act like he's the alpha. You need to re-establish his position within the pack.

Start with leash training. Every time he shows aggressive behavior, restrain him and tell him "NO." You can also feed him kibble by putting your hand in the bowl and giving him one single bit at a time, if he's showing dominance or possessiveness around his food bowl.

You should. This is unacceptable behavior.

Quote:

When he shows aggressive behavior, ANY aggressive behavior you need to step in and stop it immediately. Do NOT hit him with a rolled up newspaper. Dogs don't understand that kind of correction. Grab him by the scruff of the neck and give him a quick shake while telling him "NO!" You're not trying to remove his head here Chuck, you just want his attention.

The next thing you should be doing several time a day is a Dominant Down exercise. Roll him over on his back and hold him there until he submits. When he submits let him up.

If he's been generally good up until recently, he pushing his boundaries a little. Time to reestablish who the boss is.

Tell him shape up or you have a friend in the Philippines that would love to have him over for dinner.

Growl louder. Bare more teeth than he does.

And bite him.

It takes more than a couple times to show him YOU are the alpha. It's not a "once and done" thing.

Sure he will. He's a small little thing, you should be able to hold him there for at LEAST three hours.

Consistency is key. Everyone in the family needs to be consistent in what the dog is allowed to do. Remember, there is no equality in a dog's world. You are either higher on the ladder, or lower. Nobody stands on the same rung, and the dog will always test to see where he stands. It's not about being mean to the dog, but firm and consistent.
