What's wrong with Music these days?
I put new 6 1/2" speakers in the mid panels of my '98 this morning. Some Kenwood 3-ways rated at 70W RMS. The reason I put the new speakers in was because I have started collecting music I like again, through AmazonMP3 -
(Yes, I pay for music. One song at a time, carefully chosen, each a gem) - and I was having trouble with bass distortion at any reasonable (top-down, 75 mph) volume. DURRR Durr DURRR DURRrr... The new speakers are fine... the three-way means I'm hearing some details from the mid-panels I've never heard before, but... ... I still have a problem with the bass distorting. I can turn the volume up higher, before it becomes a problem, but it's still there... ...on the NEWER stuff only. I can turn up my older stuff - "Sweet Home Alabama", "Bad Moon Rising", "Seven Bridges Road", Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Def Leppard, Starship, Styx, Guns N Roses, Poison, Queen, even Ozzy and "Crazy Train" - until it's painfully loud, and it never develops that that awful bass distortion. I can turn up my orchestral stuff - Ave Fortuna, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Barber's Adagio, William Tell, 1812 Overture - and it never develops the heavy distortion. But I can't turn up the newer stuff very loud at all, before the bass distortion DURRR DURRR DuRR DURRRrrr is unbearable. Maddening! |

most new stuff is designed to be played in conjunction with one or more sub woofers.
put a sub in and then a filter to have most of the lows to the woofer. no more awful sounding durr |

New stuff is designed for 80-billion watt subwoofers in cars. Also, they use so much dynamic compression that there's no "loud" or "soft" any more-- it's all the same volume. This is primarily because modern music is mixed for playing in cars and personal music players, NOT home audio systems where there's very little background noise.

Maybe I'm too late for the radio suggestions...But does your head unit have a filter option? Or can you install a filter to filter out the lower frequencies? This should fix your distortion.

Thanks.
I will just have to suffer through the distortion, and maybe stick to more older stuff. I took a pair of 10" speakers, massive particleboard speaker box, and an amp OUT of the car, that the kid who I bought it from had originally installed. All that crap weighed 30 pounds! 30 pounds of extra weight in a sports car! HERESY! (Mostly in the huge-ass speaker box which was fitted to the cargo well) |

The unit does have an "HPF" section in the audio settings, and a few other settings which look similar. I have never gotten into their use, not sure what I would do with them.

Lacking an active crossover, A 1000µF capacitor placed inline on one of the speaker leads will help filter out sub-40hz frequencies.
