Awesome man.
I had a '71 LT-1 convertible mostly original drive line. I probably should have kept that car. |

When I bought my 64 the guy said it had an LT1. I didn't believe him. I think there were only about 14K made (just enough to qualify for SCAA). Thing ran like shit.
I ended up rebuilding it. Turns out it was the real deal. Pink rods, windage tray, original cam, solid lifters, aluminum high rise, original Holley. We went through all the stampings to confirm. The reason it ran like shit was because it was 11:1 compression and I couldn't get high enough octane for it. The shop that decked it wiped the casting number like idiots. So the value plummeted. So two years ago I rebuilt it again installing roller hydraulic cam system, new pistons but keeping the good stuff. Holley broke the base so I installed a Demon. Also ported and polished extensively. Kept the same heads, intake, rods, crank, etc. I was getting tired of adjusting lifters and using octane boost. I figure, once the casting number is gone who cares? I'd rather just have it run. And run like a mother it does. Gained about a few horses (was 370 - now about 400 at the flywheel at 6500). Runs great - never has left me stranded. I've had a few people offer me a couple thousand for the intake for some reason. |

That is pretty much the pinnacle of SB Stingrays. Nice find. While trying to find an original GM BB hood for my 70 LS5 I ended up finding one from an LT1. Same hood minus the emblem holes.

Sucks they wiped the numbers off. That's one thing I watched out for when I went through the '72. |

Cross rams were dealer installed or delivered in the trunk, so all Z/28 Camaros started life with the same manifold.
After I play with my 70 for a little while, I am thinking of trading it for a roadster, would love to find an LT1. |

Mine isn't stock. With aluminum heads, intake, valve covers, electric fans, headers and open air cleaner, it weighs much less than a stock iron LS5. I also have a VBP glass spring, Edelbrock shocks, and VBP adjustable strut rods in it along with VBP front springs so it should handle OK once its aligned. |

It's an amazing find considering where it came from. He also has a '70 Chevelle SS 396/4-speed sitting under a tarp in his field. It hasn't run for years. He had two '70ish Montecarlos under tarps. An '86 Corvette without a tarp (or an engine). A '68 Ford F250 4x4 that he was trying to get going so he could sell it. The '70 Corvette was the only car he kept inside and it was in a dirt floor double car garage (the other half was filled with quads). He won't sell the Chevelle. I didn't ask about the Montecarlos. It appeared that all his $$ had gone into this $50k sandrail with an LS2 that he had stored in an enclosed car trailer. He started it up for us. All I could say was "Wow!". He's a really nice guy. He's also got an '06 GTO with a 6-speed he's thinking about selling. I may go back after that one.
