NB2K - PM or email me for a "starter kit" in zip file provided to me today by a ISO resistrar. Excellent starting point and keeps it simple. Much rather be in your postion of starting the process than trying to deconstruct some monterous level of unnescessary documentation.

Why else would I need some numbnuts telling me I'm wrong for exceeding my customers' expectations when he has already admitted that he failed at running his own business twice?

My biggest gripe with ISO 9001:2000 is that we can no longer design on the fly. If a customer comes to me with an application thats just outside the scope of my normal product offerings, I can't do anything for the guy. All the documentation required to maintain certification takes too long and adds too much to the cost.

I can actually see the benefit of standards for a large, multi-faceted organization.

But as a small company, if you don't do things well and consistently deliver quality, you don't survive.

sounds like a good reason to avoid ISO cert.

imagine if my little woodshop tried to write down everything involved with what i do, and tried to define everything i have made or will make.... and then if someone wanted something made that i had not written down.....nuts.

Implemented ISO-9000 process to certification at a local manf.

Performed 20+ audits during that period.

Learned a lot, but glad I'm out of it.

Make sure the only "controlled documents" are PC based.

Anything in print, is NOT controlled.

Wrong.

If its marked controlled when printed then all is ok. However its best not to have out there. Tracking revisions is a biatch. The auditors will check for that. But, in the case of my company its a necessary evil.

Revision to the last post. ALL the non-controlled documents must be marked as such to make the differentiation on controlled and non-controlled documents.

Assumptions made that they would be smart enough to realize this.

Makes document control much easier.

Most of the discrepancies that I caught were printed documents that never reflected changes made in the process.

It's basically a scam. Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork. But having the certification does open the doors to future business.
In a nutshell. You have a written process on how every operation in your business /industry is to be carried out. And you have the paperwork to show you're carrying out those standards.
