Default Rush garage
I don't understand how I get roped into these projects.

A contractor called me yesterday early afternoon. I did some small jobs for him in the past. He's building a garage 20'x28' deep, and the depth is down a steep hill. 12' difference between the front and back. He's using 12" block, doesn't know how much steel to use since the residential charts only go to 8' tall. Going to fill it with crushed stone.

Me: You're going to have a lot of steel. Whatever's in the chart figure to double it, maybe more. You've got to connect that steel to the slab to keep the walls from leaning away. So you've reinforced a slab that's sitting on stone. And you're taking a big chance filling it with no support, hoping that it will stay in place while you pour a slab and wait 28 days for it to harden. How much is all that stone going to cost?

Him. $6000.

Me: Why not use a steel form pan, reinforce it? You're paying for that slab steel anyway, and you'll save on the wall steel.

Him: Um. Where do I.... How do I...

Me: Look, these things are built every day on commercial jobs. You'll have to build an intermediate wall, because I can only span about ten feet. So estimate the cost savings and get back to me.

Him: Where do I get the steel pan?

Me: Commercial building suppliers. Not Lowes.... It should be cheap- it's like 22, 24 gauge.... And you can use 8" block for the walls, saving even more...

Him: We already got the 12" block on site. The mason will be here in the morning....
