I'm 63 and have only been called once, and it was when I was in my 20's. I'm not complaining!

I was the foreman for a murder case. I’m glad I did it, I’m not sure I really want to do it again. What an emotionally draining experience.

So I told my boss about my summons and he told me to check the box that says I'm vital to the operation of the company. (I really am). I am supposed to be in the middle of what I am calling the 'mid-west tour' installing sport shooting ranges in Tenn, KY, OH, Mi and Indy. I am the only one in the company who knows how to do all this and due to the nature of the contract, it has to be done by Oct 31. I sent in the letter to the clerk, she emailed me back saying she will contact the judge to make a determination and let me know. I would be happy to defer to another time when I am home, but this is not the month!

Yeah, good luck with that I've checked the same box (I'm self-employed, there is no one to send in to work in my place) and still had to report to jury duty.

They'll likely let you defer to another time but prob won't let you off completely.

I've only been called 3 times in my life. Once was for federal grand jury, which would have been a multi-hour drive each way for me 1 day/wk for 6 weeks. I was still (sort of) recovering from lung surgery, & driving/riding in a car could be uncomfortable. Doc wrote me a letter & the judge accepted it.

The other 2 times were for the local county court. I got called in 3 times for questioning, & got excused each time for various reasons. My favorite was when I believe I psyched out the defendant. He was a snotty young kid charged with breaking into a house & stealing a bunch of stuff. He kept looking at everyone in the jury box & talking to his lawyer. I assume that he was offering her HIS advice on which jurors he liked/disliked. So I decided to stare at him. Never took my eyes off him. He kept looking back at me, and finally pointed me out to his lawyer. I think he was afraid that I knew him somehow. It worked; I was the first juror his lawyer excused.

Got a call from the Judges clerk and he accepted my excuse. I’m pretty happy. I don’t mind doing it and if they schedule me out far enough I can work around it but I have to have some lead time.
