Default OBD11 reader question...

Are there any readers that can clear the codes for you or is that dealer only.

I thought they all would? Unless you are talking about clearing the history. My mechanic has one that clears all the code history, says he paid around $5K for it! The one I have cost me $20 at Pep Boys and can clear the code, but not the history

Agreed, simple one should do the trick if your just trying to get the service engine soon light to turn off

Odd thing, wife's 01 Focus twin cam 2.0 started setting lights saying gas cap loose,etc....never found it, gave up and let the light be on, and after a few months the light went out...the gas cap indicator AND the code set light car runs fine..... I have a 20 buck reader from HF.....

The computer in my vette runs with a simple speed density hotrod chip update from a '88-91 vette.....I have several of the computers, so I keep them circulating through the car to ensure I have a good one, but have never had a failure.....since '95, knock on wood....for the vette I have an old scanner that stays in the car....call it OBD1 by default, I guess......

Agree with consensus. Everything beyond the cheapest "scanner" will have the ability to clear (most of) the active codes. If you don't have one, the parts store borrow units will do it as well.

Yea I just want one that clears codes. None of these will re program the ECU's correct for that you need the dealership i assume.

To clear the codes, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes.

I have a cheap Blue Point unit I bought on the Crack On truck about 5 years ago, it's the cheapest one they make and it clears codes...

Correct, none of the hand held code readers will reflash your ecu.For that operation you need the factory/dealership scan tool and when it is done in at least Toyota's case you have to log on to their website on their network and then download the latest software patch.
