Yes, here in America, we have a bunch of white people who think they get to decide what offends non-white people. This is an example.

Back when I was a Chemical Engineer, I got assigned to do a project with the Taiwanese, probably because my wife is half Korean. I told my bosses that although I might know a little more about Chinese/Korean food than the average white guy, I knew next to nothing about their culture, and needed help navigating those waters. They hired a guy who was born and raised in Taiwan, but when to college in the US. He spoke perfect English, and was invaluable on the project. One of the things he told me was to avoid racial discussions if at all possible. If forced into it, he said DO NOT refer to the Taiwanese as "Asians", use the word "Oriental". He said that the Taiwanese feel they are from "The Orient" which is specific to Chinese history, and that they would be deeply offended if I called them "Asian". For example, they look at people from Mongolia as being "Asian", and more or less consider Mongolians to be a race of retarded people.

But yes, here in America, every liberal white Karen will have a shit fit if you refer to Chinese people as "Oriental" and claim that "things are oriental, people are asian" with no idea how clueless they really are.
