So as my student and I were zipping down the backstretch
Yesterday at something north of 100 I asked him why the "BRAKE" idiot light was on. "Oh, that's the wear indicator."
YA THINK? |

It can be an adventure for sure, I look the car over and definitely check brake pads ( if I can see them) before getting in the right seat. For nooBs, I always drive the first 2 laps just to feel the car out. But I never go over 5/10 in someone else's car. It can act totally different under heavy braking and acceleration.

Being it's your ass in the seat, one of those inspection cameras may be a very good investment. They have mirrors to get a 90* view from the lens.
As nasty as that brake pad looks, I guess it's safe to assume the rotors were toast too |

Surprisingly not. That was my downfall. I always looked at a student's rotors for damage, never went to the effort to try to see the pads.

My introduction goes as follows- why are you here ? Where did you have your car inspected, any modifications, what is your lug torque setting ? All the while I am walking around the car looking at each wheel. I tug on the front wheels looking for any play. As soon as I get inside, check for any loose items. Especially check the back seats as those will come and make your day in the worst corner.

Sadly, I've seen worse. Some people should not be allowed to drive.

Speaking of brakes and instructing, one of my instructor buddies got the ride of his life last Friday. Old modified C4 blew a brake hose in the brake zone for turn one at Summit Point. My student and I were 2 cars back.
There is two things you can do at turn 1. Go straight and end up on the skidpad, or go through the gravel trap and hopefully scrub off enough speed not to hit the wall. Student chose to go straight and didn't make it all the way through the skid pad entrance. Clipped the tire wall with his right rear quarter panel. Both student and instructor were fine. Lesson here is : Get to the track early and pick your student based on the car. I was in a brand new BMW M2. |
