Nice gift for my #1 Grandchild born just recently, a little guy up in Nevada City Ca.....beats anything I could buy....Cereal bowl??

xxxxxxxxx and I had a healthy little boy today at 230 PM. He's got ten fingers, 10 toes, weighed 9 lbs 11 oz (!) and is 22" long. He enjoys boobs, being bounced / swayed by his pop and tiny, tiny socks. His name, favorite color etc are not yet established.

I'm grateful for the love an support of all my friends & family. Please, don't take it personally if I don't get back to your text or other message. It is only indicative that I'm exhausted and caring for a newborn for the first time.

not really intended for liquids like soup or cereal. dry food would be ok.

Well, like it to be, but about finishes for food/liquids/baby I dunno anything....so can't really comment about the appropriateness of it.....

just that it wood be something unique and useful to some extent, and being wood product it wood fit in with my Son/Wife's lifestyle.....

little wood and wood finish lesson:

red oak is an open cell wood, not suitable for cutting boards or barrels. in contrast, white oak is a closed cell wood, suitable for cutting boards and barrels (like those used to season Maker's Mark and Jack Daniels).

the finish i used is a food safe mineral oil and beeswax mix, same as i use on my cutting boards. if i had used polyurethane, it would be ok to use for dry stuff like candy and chips. i used this finish as it's easy, dries in about 20 min, and is easily reapplied if it starts to wear. with poly, you'd have to strip it down to bare wood and then put a new coat on.
