Again, I know little, I am sure in 10 years when the feds release the report, we will know about 10% of what really happened. |

Damn, Imagine you are driving, listening to your favorite tunes in the early morning, and within a microsecond, you are plummeting into the river. F-that

I wonder if the ship's horn worked at all when they lost power. Apparently, they had some kind of power to notify someone affiliated with the bridge operation by radio, as I'm reading it's a toll bridge and the toll booth attendants halted traffic from entering. I'm assuming the ship's horn is air powered, so was there a compressed air tank that could have powered the horn to warn those on the bridge, or was the whole system the equivalent of drive by wire, so no power, no way to activate the horn?
I know we have quite a few ex Navy folks here. How does all this work? |

I find it hard to believe that the bridge foundations were not better protected. Compared to the cost of that superstructure, a bit of sheet piling and rock would have been very little.

I watched the long version of the video. It looks like the only cars on the bridge was the work crew.
They said they had stopped almost all the traffic but how in the world did the work crews not notice/get a call, etc...I imagine even while it had power it had a horn. |

It is not cost possible to upgrade all bridges and / or make spans wider, so this is a MUCH, MUCH cheaper alternative. As you all know, I am a part-time sometimes engineer, in all engineering fields, so do not question my inputs. Here is the new Skyway Bridge, it is nearly impossible for a ship to hit the bridge: |

If you stopped hoarding all the rocks for your driveway they could have made the improvements to the bridge

As 30 year retired MM Captain this accounting by Capt. Klaus Luhta is dead on. The idea that tugs would have helped is wrong once the vessel leaves birth it has to be underway makingway on it's own in order to maneuver. In my opinion after watching the video several times and speaking to other retired Masters, the cloud of heavy black smoke was the last ditch effort to move the vessel to the full astern (reverse) attitude. To address a couple other comments, the vessel would have been under the command of the harbor pilot with the master at his side at the helm. Harbor pilots are very experienced in their profession and very well compensated. As for stopping it, it doesn't have Brembo brakes so it wont stop on a dime. A ship of that size, at speed will take up to a mile to come to rest.
Terrible for all involved and horrible loss of life. https://www.foxbusiness.com/industri...chanical-error Capt Van |

I watch a lot of disaster shows. This is not the first time a ship or barge has hit a bridge pylon and cause a collapse. Two come to mind. One in Tampa and the other I think was New Orleans.
Both case the pylon was not protected in any way if a ship should run away. Now there are barriers to keep this from happening. If our NTSB was any good even after the first time this happened, YEARS AGO, all bridges that have large ships or barges crossing under them, these bridges should have BARRIERS IN PLACE ALREADY to prevent this from happening. This was highly preventable. |
