pErVeY update???

My apologies for leaving you guys in the dark.

I wish I had better news, but the truth is they had to put him back on a ventilator last Saturday night. He has been that way ever since. I have been told that they are going to try and take him off the vent tomorrow if his numbers look good.

For those that are wondering this all started two weeks ago. To put it mildly he got tired of not getting any better. He called my mom in one afternoon and they wrote a list of demands. I'm not sure what all of them were but the essence was he wanted some normalcy and he wanted them to get off their asses and decide how to get him out of the hospital.

The level of medical care available in Victoria, TX can best be described as medieval. That being said his doctors decided that they needed a piece of his lung in order to really figure out what was wrong with him. He told them he knew it was his rheumatoid arthritis that was attacking his lungs, but they said they needed to be sure. So that Wednesday they put him under and cut out a section of his right lung to biopsy. He came through the procedure okay and woke up on Thursday.

The next two days he was given a lot of morphine, and thus said he felt great. He spent that Saturday with my sister and his oldest grandson. The left him in good spirits at about 7:30 PM. He called his mother at about 8 PM to tell her he was feeling really good. At 11:45 PM the hospital called my mom that his oxygen numbers were crashing and that they were going to have to re-intubate him. When I got to see him on Sunday that had put him on a paralytic to force his lungs to rest and had him sedated.

On Monday they began treating him with Cytotoxan, a chemotherapy drug that can be used to fight auto-immune disease like rheumatoid arthritis. They decided to leave him under for the treatment and then for the rest of the week. The biopsy results came back and showed exactly what dad had predicted, fibrosis caused by his RA.

We are now asking his doctors to arrange a move to Houston, where I live and where the medicine is more cutting-edge. I think he might have a better chance to recover up here.

The last six weeks have been a real emotional roller coaster for everyone in our family and a trip through hell for my dad. Just keep praying for him and I'm positive he will make it through this.
