Default Transferring title. I didn’t get the memo.

I don’t trade or sell a lot of vehicles, but I have always thought that having a title in hand that bore the stamped, signed release from a lien holder was prima facie evidence the title was free and clear.

Apparently not. I have to go to the dmv and have the vehicle title reissued. WTF? Am I going senile? Don’t answer that.

I brought a copy of my corvette title to the DMV to get a new clear title without the lien holder listed after I had paid it off. They told me they didn't have to issue me another title, they just needed to see the release from the lien holder and update their system.

In 1974 I bought a vehicle that the owner had not had long enough to put it in his name, but he had the pink slip from the previous owner signed on the back, which releases the title to the new owner.

It was signed on the wrong line. It was quite an adventure getting that one taken care of.

That's the way it works here also. The only problem is if you lose that title and have never shown the DMV that the lien was satisfied. You'll have no way to prove it. I had to get the lien company to send me a release to show the DMV that I had satisfied the lien when I traded in my 1st Harley cause I could not find the title.
