Erning's hut is about done.
Since it sits near the seawall and will get spray at high tide when it is windy we used plywood for the sea side, as the Amakan will leak if windy, and half walled it for the rest, but then use the ordinary Amakan for the upper part as it saves cost and is also cooler. The Amakan is nailed and then bamboo strips are put on to keep it tight and gives it more support. I already had the windows so gave them to him, the larger one was half of a window set and will not be opened, but lets in some light. The jealousy widows at the sea side open to give him cool air from the sea. The Nipa for the roof arrived today so will get it on this week, the bamboo is already nailed down for the Nipa to be tied to with nylon. Just hang a door and he will be ready to move out of his hot tent into his new home later next week. Not a bad view. |

They all had permission in the past to live there, and some family's have lived on the same land for generations. But as the land got passed down through time... the grandchildren that now own it, just want to sell. Erning who will live in the 8X10 hut in the photos above, I let transfer to the front corner of our place for now, just a few feet from where he lived before. we don't use the space or need it for now and we can always carry his hut to another location later if we do need the space. I only plan to provide the labor for one more family for a 10X12, but the others can rebuild themselves with the materials we have given them. I plan to get photos of all of the family's we have helped so far to post here, and will get photos of their new places also when they are ready. |

The building is happening and the chainsaw operator is busy cutting us trees. I am witness to 10 houses being built from the donated money. Some of the other funds are being used to buy more trees and just provide lumber to some people and some have trees and just asked if we will pay the saw to cut their trees that they have.
I am not sure how to even explain the amount of destruction here. Many of the trees are all broken in half and houses completely destroyed. However, the people are all smiling and know that life will go on. The noise a coconut tree makes when the saw man cuts it down is loud, but imagine thousands of them falling around you and not knowing if you are about to be hit. I really am at a loss for words here. All I know is that the ones I have met and lumber we have delivered has brought not only smiles to the people being helped, but also tears to my own eyes. I don't know if a picture can even capture their happiness. YOU All made this happen! And we have been letting them know that they have friends in the US and CAN that are happy to help. Tonight is a Tanduay night. Pray for me. |

I know the feeling very well myself that Rob is experiencing.. and am witness to seeing Rob getting a bit emotion sometimes when I am showing him around here, and introducing him to the people here in our village.
He has met all of the people and family's that we have been helping, and seeing the progress as I have been walking and driving him around and introducing him to everyone here. No way can he remember all of their names yet... But I have to give him credit for trying hard, and also trying to learn a few words to say to the people here in their own language. As we walk around, Rob is now choosing some of the family's himself that he wants to see get help, and we have daily discussions together on how we can help them the most, and make the best use of the funds available to go as far as possible. Christmas is over now, and we were both so lucky to see all of the smiles and happiness that we all here were able to give to the kids here with the help of all of you guys and gals here at the Barn. For the rest of Rob's visit here we will be working together daily to get as much done as we can while he is here, I will also continue after he has gone home. Things go slowly here, and for the last few weeks we have not had a saw cutter, but I was finally able to get one again over the past week. Today 5 trees were cut into lumber, and Rob enjoyed seeing how things are done here. It was another long hot day in the sun, and a good thing Rob brought plenty of sun blocker.. (He is getting pretty red still) Tanduay time now..... |
