For the technically curious. All shot in RAW mode with the 100-400 Canon IS. Most shot at ISO 200, a few at 400. Exposure compensation +.33 for shooting directly into the sky. All shots heavily cropped. The 400mm end has good reach, but not great.

Down here (St Louis area) there is a large population of eagles that come down from the North every winter to feed since the Mississippi rarely freezes here. There are eagle watching parties and a ll kinds of events set up every January.
They are awesome birds

I haven't. I think you lose autofocus with those. (I think)

Holy sheit, I thought the first one was excellent.
You can count striations in the tail feathers on one of those shots.

That is really some awesome shooting, particularly against a bright sky.

This lens is only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 135mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200/2.8L, EF 70-200/2.8L IS, EF 70-200/4L, and EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L.

I searched...it seems it works on 1D bodies, primes, and you can tape over some pins to get the AF working...but it slows the AF. I also read most prefer the 1.4 and say the 2.0 is trash.

I saw a bald eagle swoop down into the Potomac and pull out a carp that had to weight a good 20 lbs. Carried that sucker off like it was nothing. Impressive creatures!

I've been to a bird sanctuary before and seen some of these guys up close. So beautiful, utterly terrifying.
