next door neighbor called the EPA on me

The drunk behind us ( convicted of DUI- hasn't had his license in over a year ) called the EPA to report "a large drum leaking a lot of oil into the ground".

I got a call from Jon from the local branch of the EPA asking if he could come over to take a look at our property. I ask why and he tells me "somebody" called about a drum leaking oil onto the ground at the back of the property. I said there aren't any oily drums anywhere on the property and we set up a time for later that afternoon.

He comes over, introduces himself and says about half of the complaints are bogus but if there is a problem, he just wants it cleaned up. Nice guy, no attitude at all.

Turns out the "large leaking drum of oil" is a 55 gallon barrel that the previous owner used as a water container for the garden. I explain how he captured the rain runoff off the shed roof and collected it in rain barrels. They kept this drum as the "fill drum" for watering the garden.

He looks at the area and sees no sign of leakage, it's dry under the drum and he did not smell anything.

I suggest he check out the rest of the back property line so when he writes his report, he can say he checked out the entire property. He comments on how nice we keep the property.

We will receive a copy of the report in a week or two finding NO SPILLAGE AT ALL.

I thank him and off he goes.


Mary had me bring the barrel to the driveway side of the shed. She's going to paint the barrel real nice and in big letters on one side, write EPA APPROVED

Then it goes back to where it was before

It's good when you can identify the asshole in the neighborhood. That way you know it's not you.

I've given up on dandelions. Too rural to compete with weeds.( without massive chemical use ) It's farmland across the road from me.

Years back I had a official sticker on my lunch box that said Hazardous Waste.
I found it on the ground at the chemical plant my contractor was working for.

Went through a vehicle check and the state trooper saw it and said very clearly "WHAT IS IN THERE" Told him my lunch and even opened it up. He laughed and then said well your a big rather fluffy guy, it looks like it agrees with you. I then laughed and we parted company!

File a small claims court case against the douchebag for time lost from work because of his harassment. Get an order of protection while you are there, and a cease and desist order as well to stop future harassment. Sue for $ 100 or some nominal amount so you don't appear greedy.

Or, go knock on the guy's door after you get the EPA's letter stating there is nothing wrong and ask the guy if he has any more problems with you, or what's going on on your property, that he man up and knock on your door and talk to you directly about it. We had an a-hole neighbor (since moved) that called the dog pound on me. I got the police report of the incident, then politely confronted them about it and told them in the nicest way possible to just knock on my door and let me know if they had another problem with anything going on at my house. Never had another incident with them.

My next door neighbor (now deceased) took the more direct approach, told the guy to come out in the street and they could settle their problems right there. Surprisingly, the douchebag neighbor went into his house instead.
