The line between movies and video games continues to blur and merge...

This is where cinema is heading... kinda. Immersion technology is rapidly advancing. First person virtual reality experiences are increasing in number.

That we're getting to see the pioneering first-person cinematic experience is really cool. I had not expected this for another 3 to 5 years. I had expected it to be an IMAX/3D presentation as well.

I believe there are people alive today that will be the first to "log in" to what amounts to the first "Matrix"... and it will be a movie.

I didn't like the way "Blair Witch Project" was filmed.

I didn't like the way "Cloverfield" was filmed.

I'm not going to like the way this movie was filmed either. I just don't enjoy an unstable camera platform.

I play FPS games all the time, but don't enjoy watching someone else play them.

So a FPS movie. No way you can beat a good FPS all the way through without a save point unless you put into ***** mode.

Couldn't wait for the morons in Blair Witch to die and couldn't make it through 10 minutes of Cloverfield without wanting to throw the remote through the television. This will be another one I will not bother wasting time on.

Long, buckle up fellas, reply:
I would somewhat disagree. IMHO this will be a niche thing like 3D. Some will pay extra for it but the masses won't be flocking to it. Is it unique? Most definitely.

Theaters and movie studios have been trying different things to get people more "hooked" into the movie going experience for years.

The problem is the "gimmicks" they're adding to the movies themselves aren't what put butts in the seats, a well acted good, well shot, good story does that.

When the audience gets pulled into the story they suspend reality around them and embrace the story. Trying to get people to do that with 3D and this FPS/VR may work in the short term but in the long term not so much.

Where VR might have a place is outside the traditional movie going experience. Personal units like Google Cardboard, Oculus Rift, Microsoft Hololens, etc.. could change the game some but, IMHO, won't be a major shift like streaming content has been.

I remember when 3D was pushed years ago on TV units. I knew it wouldn't take hold because there was too much barrier to entry for most people (among other reasons). However what I did see was the rise of the "smart TV". Doing more and more things on a single unit like the TV is where things looked to be going. What actually happened was even more than I thought.

We're really seeing a super convergence of devices but not into a single device. It's more so as joining/sharing of mutiple devices accomplishing a single goal. For example: You have the TV (HD or UHD) which can be accessed directly via a smart device (like a phone or tablet) and content shared there.

Or a TV as a dumb terminal with something like an Xbox One, Chromecast, Apple TV, etc... as the communication device between it and a smart device. Then, as with the Xbox ONE and a Windows 10 device, there is back and forth content sharing.

This is where the future of content is headed, IMHO. But even that won't fully replace the movie theater experience. The idea of people sharing the emotions of a movie can't be replace w/technology, at least not yet. Hearing people around you laughing or screaming at the same thing on the screen is what makes going to the theater so unique to watching a movie on your phone or at home.

IMHO, until that experience can be replace people will still go to a movie theater. Theywill deal with cell phones, crying babies, etc... to experience seeing a movie show on a huge screen with people who share their idea this movie is worth seeing.

As always, just my .02, YMMV.

I don't think all films will be FPV, but there will be a genre. We live in a world where millions of people logon to watch other people play FPS video games on YouTube. If Hardcore Henry does the business we'll be seeing more of them. You brought up 3D and how it hasn't penetrated the mainstream, but you mentioned this in the home segment, not the cinema segment, where every film that is expected to make any money at all has a 3D version, and a 2D version.

Ah, but there's the rub. You log on and watch because there's a game. Someone wins or loses. In a movie it's all played out.

Millions watch the Superbowl. Thousands watch the replay.

How is a first-run movie a replay? It's as unknown as that Superbowl going in.

I never said this would replace traditional third-person narrative films, I'm saying that this is coming as a genre, as a type of film. There are babies alive right now that within their lifetimes will see an immersive VR "movie"... it's going to happen.
