Funny thing about showing one's work
When I was taking my final exam for PLC Programing there was an extra credit exercise at the end, write a program that controls a basic traffic light
You know red, yellow green on all 4 sides and as usual there was a time constraint
Well I was able to complete the extra task and when he looked at the program he was silent for a sec then said that he was looking for a compare function for the process to work, yet it was working, so it does work add 10 points and walked away

P3: Burn'em! Burn them up! (burn burn burn)

V: What do you burn apart from witches?

P1: More witches! (P2 nudge P1)

(pause)

P3: Wood!

V: So, why do witches burn?

(long pause)

P2: Cuz they're made of... wood?

V: Gooood.

(crowd congratulates P2)

V: So, how do we tell if she is made of wood?

P1: Build a bridge out of her!

V: Ahh, but can you not also make bridges out of stone?

P1: Oh yeah...

V: Does wood sink in water?

P1: No

P3: No. It floats!

P1: Let's throw her into the bog! (yeah yeah ya!)

V: What also floats in water?

P1: Bread

P3: Apples

P2: Very small rocks

(V looks annoyed)

P1: Cider

P3: Grape gravy

P1: Cherries

P3: Mud

King: A Duck!

(all look and stare at king)

V: Exactly! So, logically...

P1(thinking): If she ways the same as a duck... she's made of wood!

V: And therefore,

(pause & think)

P3: A witch! (P1: a witch)(P2: a witch)(all: a witch!)

For me when training an apprentice or a new to the line mechanic I tell them that they have to learn how I do it first and then if they see it differently then do it their way as long as the final outcome is the same.
I can't help them if they are Off in a totally different direction when the issue is right in front of them as our machines are mechanical and when they start troubleshooting in the middle of a process it affects things down the line when the original issue was at the beginning of the line

I worked Jet Engine Test Cells in 4 different commands. Trouble shooting is one of the biggest parts of that job. A thorough understanding of systems and the interaction between them is crucial to be effective and accurate. But it is not math. Because you don't understand how I came to a conclusion does not make the conclusion wrong.

A big part of my duties were to train and qualify new inspectors. I wrote and administered the exams and developed the OJT curriculum.

Your comparison between troubleshooting and math aren't quite valid. I didn't start my math problems in the middle.

While testing jet engines does involve math to determine the performance and health of the engine. Correcting to standard day conditions is the largest part of that. Most of today test cell operators are not required to do the math longhand, it's all automated now.

Every time I see something like this, I think we're getting closer and closer to the society in Idiocracy... (Ironically I've seen it on TV several times lately)... We'll get to a point where we use something, but have no idea on what or how it works or how to fix it.. We're closer and closer every day..

We became a throw away society years ago.... 99% of the population has no idea how most things work nor have any interest in knowing.

My son needed 2 more math classes in college for a minor in math degree. I couldn’t talk him into it.

The “go math” curriculum seriously needs to go away. Anybody else’s school system (k-12) use go math?
