Default the "coward of Broward" arrested

the spineless resource officer who didn't DO HIS JOB during the shooting at parkland arrested.

Florida resource officer who didn't enter school during shooting massacre is arrested

Quote:
Former Marjory Stoneman Douglas High resource officer Scot Peterson, 56, was arrested Tuesday on charges relating to failure to enter the school during the mass shooting there.

He was charged in Broward County with seven counts of neglect of a child, three counts of culpable negligence and one of perjury after a 15-month investigation, according to a news release from Florida authorities.

The charges carry a combined potential prison sentence of nearly 100 years for the officer blasted by many critics as the "Coward of Broward."

Peterson’s bail was set at $102,000.

Once released, Peterson will be required to wear a GPS monitor and surrender his passport, and will be prohibited from possessing a firearm, the prosecutor said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) "investigation shows former deputy Peterson did absolutely nothing to mitigate the MSD shooting that killed 17 children, teachers and staff and injured 17 others,” said FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen. “There can be no excuse for his complete inaction and no question that his inaction cost lives.”

Investigators interviewed 184 witnesses and reviewed hours of video surveillance to determine the response of law enforcement, Fox 13 reported.

"It’s never too late for accountability and justice,” Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said.

Tony said Peterson has been formally fired, although he announced his retirement shortly after the shooting.

Republican Sen. Rick Scott said in a statement: “Had this individual done his job, lives would have been saved. Actions (or inaction) have consequences. We need more accountability, and that includes at the FBI, which has yet to show me a single example of how they’ve improved their processes following the failures in the leadup to the Parkland shooting.”

Ryan Petty, the father of slain student Alaina Petty, said in a statement, “Today marks another step in the search for accountability. … Peterson failed in his duty to protect lives that day, standing behind a cement pillar for 48 minutes while students and teachers were slaughtered.”

Fred Guttenberg, another father of a victim, tweeted: “I have no comment except to say rot in hell Scott Petersen. You could have saved some of the 17. You could have saved my daughter. You did not and then you lied about it and you deserve the misery coming your way.”

Peterson lawyer Joseph DiRuzzo III didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. In the past, he has defended Peterson’s conduct as justified under the circumstances.

Alleged gunman Nikolas Cruz, 20, faces the death penalty if convicted of the first-degree murder charges filed in the attack. His lawyers have said Cruz will plead guilty in return for a life sentence, but prosecutors have refused that offer.

Cruz is expected to go on trial in early 2020.

Good. Why aren’t school administrations going to prison too? The exact same attacks have been happening some what consistently since Columbine, and yet nearly nobody has bothered securing these schools as a result.

They are quick to use "it's for the children" when they want more funding or pay raises.

Folks entrust their children to them but all of a sudden it's somebody else that is responsible for "that". Look at their rules and regulations, it's not to protect the students, it's to cover their asses.

YOU make the big salaries and have the golden pensions, earn it by making the schools secure.

I read and post once in a while in a local Clay Co. Florida chat group on FBook, and one of the topics is of course, screwal security.....

Well, I been here some 22 years now, and the large local Hi Screwal is about a mile away at a major intersection ...a regular traffic cluster eff.....and on the corner of the campus has been a sub station of the local Clay Co. cops.....many cruisers/etc parked there all the time.....somehow that screwal campus is totally safe, gee I wonder WHY.....

WELL, that gave me the idea I mention, but the power structure refuses to take action on it,.....what is my idea???

Simple, ALL/EVERY screwal gets a small office, a corner in the Principal's office suite, where a desk and two+ monitors are set up, some cheep internet cams set up as necessary to view the 'back lot' of the building/s them WIFI cams cost next to nothing these daze, whole setup for about a grand per screwal......

SO to watch the monitors there are two cops at any given time so two cruisers in the front of the screwal, and it's nothing but an hour's worth of time on every patrol routine, stop and watch the screens then when 'relief' comes around, continue on with typical patrol duties.....this way almost no additional personnel are needed to keep screwal security intact......

hardly much of an item in a typical county screwal system budget.....

BTW, the neighbor friend who died across the street...his family installed two wi fi video cams, one in front, disguised as a doorbell, and one in back...see the whole street.....cost, nothing, easy/cheap, runs off doorbell electric power....same shit set up for the screwal buildings....

from the interwebs:

Quote:
He was criticized for staying outside.
Days after the February 14 massacre, footage surfaced of Peterson taking position near the 700 and 800 buildings at Stoneman Douglas High School, a spot he stayed at for more than 45 minutes. He was criticized by the Sheriff Scott Israel and others for not going in the nearby 1200 building when he heard gunshots.

In an arrest warrant affidavit, authorities say the gunman killed five students and one teacher and wounded three students and one teacher after Peterson arrived at the 1200 building, then moved 75 feet to another position.

It also says the gunman fired approximately 75 times after Peterson arrived.

The warrant says Peterson made a knowingly false statement to investigators by saying he only heard two or three shots when he arrived at the building.
The warrant says Peterson stayed there for more than 45 minutes.
During that time, the gunman killed five students and one teacher, authorities said.

He should 'rot in hell,' parent says
The father of a girl who was killed applauded the charges.
"Peterson failed in his duty to protect lives that day, standing behind a cement pillar for 48 minutes while students and teachers were slaughtered," Alaina Petty's father, Ryan, said. "After a year of in-depth investigation, I am pleased that the (state authorities) have brought formal charges against former deputy Scot Peterson."

The father of Jaime Guttenberg said Peterson could have saved lives.
"I have no comment except to say rot in hell, Scot Peterson," Fred Guttenberg said. "You could have saved some of the 17. You could have saved my daughter. You did not and then you lied about it and you deserve the misery coming your way."

The 15-month investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement that led to the charges, found that the former Broward County sheriff’s deputy, assigned as a school resource officer to Stoneman Douglas High, “did absolutely nothing to mitigate” the shooting, the department’s commissioner, Rick Swearingen, said in a statement. “There can be no excuse for his complete inaction and no question that his inaction cost lives,” he said.

Officials determined that Mr. Peterson, as well as Sgt. Brian Miller, who was terminated on Tuesday but not charged, “neglected their duties.” Mr. Peterson was taken into custody after an administrative discipline hearing.

The charges were an unusual instance of law enforcement officers being held criminally liable for not protecting the public.
