This will never end well.
Humans are slamming into driverless cars, exposing key flaw
For the people that know how to drive, to the people that don't. The racers, the cell phone users, the grandma's, the soccer mom's..... It's never going to work. But Google is going to go ahead anyways. |

The people who are slamming into driver-less cars are the ones who the technology is being built for.

This tells me the two need their own lanes. Yet, how to keep the two separate will be the key.

Yeah, I can't wait to trust my life to a driverless car since every other high tech product I have purchased has worked so flawlessly.

Yeah, that along with drone delivery is a combination to truly fear.
Robots can't really function well with human beings out of a controlled environment. We create terrible situations. |

We are YEARS away from these things not being an insanely STUPID ****ing idea.
The greatest super computer in the world is still a complete dumb-ass compared the the typical human brain. People have a problem with conflating performing tasks quickly with intelligence. Yes, Watson was able to quickly perform tasks and beat humans at Jeopardy. Instantly access its database of encylocpedic knowledge, use algorithms etc. to come up with possible answers, rate the answers by % likelihood of being correct, and buzz in to respond if the highest rated answer it came up with met a certain threshold. All simple tasks. Real life is not a game-show with defined rules and extreme predictability (every episode ever works the same way). |

Will, you almost had it there. DECADES is more like it. If then. My whole career has been involved with robotics, automation and AI. We now have robots on the shopfloor working alongside of humans and it is still not perfect. The robots don't hurt the workers they are with. But at the same time cannot predict every move they are going to make. Let alone quick enough to do it. And this is with a human standing still. Just one human there, in a controlled environment. And still, it can't be perfect in its synchronization. The robot has quicker movements by a factor of 10, at least. Is more precise in its movements by a factor of 100. Application and control of force is about par with a human. Throw a hundred humans going 70+ MPH at it in 4000 lb. vehicles. Forget about it. NO WAY IN HELL can it keep up. Minor scrapes my ass. Its only a matter of time before one of these "tests" causes a major pile up. Hey Google!!! How many lives are you willing to bet on you making a profit on this? |

The technology is coming where accident avoidance may become statistically more reliable and safer than the human driver. Which way do you think the insurance companies will go, smart computers save money or stupid drivers lose money? Once this happens mandatory GOV requirements will follow, this has already happened for mandatory things in our cars for our safety.
Insurance companies will make it really expensive to drive cars/trucks that are not in compliance with XYZ technologies (think of the children) and people will be forced to get rid of their old cars or store them in a museum. Many years down the road, roads as we know them will change. If computers are in charge we will not need stop lights as the computers can time ingress/exit into intersections, aircraft do this now but at a different level. I think I am old enough I will be gone before this happens (I hope). |

I need to find the video of the guy that built a driverless car in his garage for about $500. He said he should be able to sell the system for one grand that can be installed in any vehicle and add the same to any new car.
The time is coming and I feel insurance companies will penalize those without this technology.

Problem is computers malfunction. Imagine if one of those computers crashed. You would probably wreck. Plus where is the joy of driving. I know all of you remember learning to drive, scaring the crapp put of your parents, but also spending time with them. I just hate to see the freedom of driving destroyed by a machine.

First, the variables involved in driving are far greater than flying, or navigating a ship.
Then, what do you do WHEN the computer crashes, freezes, or just plain goofs up? Does the driver, with badly atrophied driving skills, take over? When he hasn't been paying attention, or has dozed off? Effects of maintainance, tire condition, road vagaries, etc. Nope, any fully autonomous "cars" won't be anything like what we recognise. They may be like automated taxis, which come pick you up and take you where you are going. No self ownership. And NO alternative, no choice. Only busses, trains and airplanes. And you can only go as far as .gov lets you, when they let you, IF they let you. |

If all cars are autonomous, they could easily deal with either of those safely. That said, autonomous cars suck at predictive analytics on the fly, like noticing that the car four vehicles ahead is acting like it's about to hit its brakes. Right now they're only reactive, and to the immediate environment. This makes them less safe than a safe driver, though more safe than the least safe drivers. |
