for the last 3 days, including today, i've been digging a series of ditches. by hand.

rule 1 of holes: if you find yourself in a hole, stop digging

rule 2 of holes: at some point, the dirt has to come out to make the hole/ditch

rule 3 of holes: any given hole will look like less work than it actually is

rule 4 of holes: there will always be some dirt that will not fit back in the hole when you are done.

I see a lot of digging going on around here. So many new homes going up in north Texas. Some of the saddest building I have ever seen. They are just yanking trees out then digging a foot or so in fluffed dirt and calling it a foundation. Then add some sticks and chipboard with a brick fascia and sell it for big bucks. It is amazing what fools will pay for. That is why I build my own.

Caltrans, the agency in California who does roadwork, has announced they will be laying off 50% of their labor force. This layoff coincides with the purchase of several hundred thousand shovels equipped with kickstands.

Good exercise but if I had very much to dig, I'd be looking to rent some heavy machinery.
In our area you can get a 2 ton excavator for about $200/day.

just tested the whole trench drain in front of the garage that drains across the driveway to an existing drainage ditch (which needed to be cleared of silt) system out ---- and it WORKS!!!!

yay.

ok, bring on the rainy season.

also power washed my truck, Mrs. DAB's Subaru, and the garage floor where we park above vehicles.

a very productive last 3 days and this morning.

main rain season, the "monsoons" is normally june/july, and sometimes part 2 comes sept/oct.

when it rains, it all comes at ONCE! and then you get arroyo flash floods. it's a mess.
