bilmem Geometry help.

I never was good at geometry. Someone would ask me to find an angle, all I could do was point at a crooked line and say, "There it is."

So here is the question: Side "A" is 6 inches long, Hypotnuese is 29.5 inches long, Side B is 29 inches long. What the hell is my angle?

sine = opposite/hypotenuese

sine of small angle = 6/29.5 = 0.23389

so angle = 11.74 degrees.

sin(a) = 6/29.5

a = 11.73 degrees

The other angle is 90-11.73 = 78.27 degrees

To work it out just using the two sides (not the hypotenuse) then it would be:

tan(a) = y/x = 6/29

a = arctan(6/29) = 11.69 degrees

I'm thinking this is really your angle since there's no way your hypotenuse is 29.5 with the other two sides being 29 and 6 respectively. There's a measurement error there. I mean, it's probably very close to 29.5, but if the other two sides are precisely 29 and 6 respectively, the hypotenuse is actually:

sqrt(6^2 + 29^2) = 29.61 inches.

if you don't have a calculator handy, you can also solve this on the slide rule, using the C and D scales to find 6/29.5 = 0.203, and then flipping it over to read the angle off the S scale = 11.74 degrees.

And children, always remember, all you need to totally know everything about a right triangle is, other than it's a right triangle, is two more pieces of information. The length of any two sides, or a side length and an angle. That's it!

With side "a" at 6" long and the hypotenuse at 29.5 inches long, angle "A" is 11.735°

Right Scalene Triangle
Side a = 6
Side b = 28.88339
Side c = 29.5

Angle ∠A = 11.735° = 11°44'7" = 0.20482 rad
Angle ∠B = 78.265° = 78°15'53" = 1.36598 rad
Angle ∠C = 90° = 1.5708 rad = π/2

With side "a" at 6" long and side "b" at 29" long, angle "A" is 11.689°

Right Scalene Triangle
Side a = 6
Side b = 29
Side c = 29.61419

Angle ∠A = 11.689° = 11°41'22" = 0.20402 rad
Angle ∠B = 78.311° = 78°18'38" = 1.36678 rad
Angle ∠C = 90° = 1.5708 rad = π/2

I used this on line calculator to copy the info for pasting
https://www.calculator.net/triangle-calculator.html

I also used my machinist calculator and came up with the same values.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Calculated-...frcectupt=true

Now if I was making this part for you, you would have gotten a phone call or an email asking which values to use.

I've got a friend that was on a slide rule kick a few years ago. Buying them at flea markets and antique stores. He was hell bent on ignoring modern technology.

When he finally got a smart phone, he downloaded a rotary dial app for it.

Tell him if he had a real rotary phone, he could dial just by clicking the button on the cradle that hangs it up

I often make use of hypotenuse while squaring construction. I don't know what the hell it is but I use it somehow.
