And thats why I have a generator.

If I was going to leave it would have been two days ago. Given the traffic and the fact no place to shelter in that is not in the path of the hurricane for the next 800 miles.

Our important city infrastructure all got permanent emergency generators after Ike. That isn't a guarantee, however, as we saw from the Arkema plant in Crosby, TX, that had after the fact explosions from unstable chemicals that lost refrigeration when....the emergency generators, that were already positioned and elevated off the ground, flooded.

You can plan, be prepared, whatever. Sometimes Mother Nature just decides to kick your ass anyway.

After hurricanes Jeanne and Frances in 2004, I can confirm that power grids with vital locations get preference.
Fortunately, my sister's house was on the "good" side of the street and we got power 3 days before the houses across the street.

Plus my guns get lonely and break into the liquor cabinet when I'm gone and that never a good thing.

If you haven't left by now, you ARE NOT going to get ANYWHERE. Interstates are parking lots.

The Weather Channel and News Channels are not stop reality shows right now.
My wife just sits there and stares at the screen watching the colors go round and the cars streaming out of South Florida.
I have to admit.
It is fascinating.

we're high and dry in NM, but we're watching weather channel.

Mrs. DAB's mom used to own a vacation house in Marathon, FL. sold it in 2008. phew. it's now a rental, asking 7400/month off season. buyer owns several in the area. paid cash. self insured. he's going to be the market for bulk purchases of lots of things in a week.

They have moved the track center closer to hitting you straight on (west side of FL) and Strengthen to a CAT 5 before hitting Key West and your area.

God be with ya and hope you stay safe FL!

Generally what happens here is the more densely populated areas get fixed first. I does make sense that if you can restore power to 1,000 homes or 100 homes with the same manpower, you do the 1,000 first.

2 br/ 2 ba and a den (can be used as a br in a pinch), all concrete construction, up on stilts, new owner added a pool, backs to a canal for ocean access via the wood dock.

not really that fancy, but it's 3 houses from the beach. we spent part of our honeymoon there, and went back a few times after that until it was sold. spent our last trip there mostly renovating the kitchen. yeah, i know kitchens.

My parents have a 1st floor , up down condo in Bonita Springs about two miles from the gulf. Surge won't be an issue, hopefully, however they have no hurricane shutters, so window damage might come into play. They have a tile roof so hopefully it'll hold. Luckily they are't there.

I spoke to the first people that moved here. They told me they watched my house being built. Not CBS. Poured reinforced concrete.
What am I going to do with all that booze?

I say it goes east to the gulf and then turns up to NOLO.
I'm no weather guy, but the direction that thing is spinning and going, the west coast may just get lucky.
