My house is a single level, on a slab. 2200SF. Dual pane glass, insulated, etc. I have gas heat and electric AC. Heat is set at 65 (I wear a sweater) AC is set to 80. Only need the AC on 95+ degree days due to insulation and dry climate. If I set the AC to 78 and the heat to 72, the energy goes up over 50% more. A relative in NC was bragging about his Tesla and I asked him what his kwh rate was, and he said 6 cents per kwh. I let him know that I paid 8 times more for the same electricity, and that electric was not viable where I am, despite the political rainbows-and-kittens political agenda.

Shit I can't believe what some are paying. I am surprised if I have to pay over a hundred bucks. But I do move with the seasons.

My set points are 67 for heat, and 78 for AC. The question is, how many hours are those systems running? I hate the cold, so in winter, the heat is on nearly all of the time from January through most of March. Other days, when it isn't too cold, I turn the system off when the wife leaves for work, and only turn it back on when it starts getting cold in the house, which can be a day or two.

I hate AC, so I only turn it on when the wife wants it, or the dog looks like she's dying. We get heat waves where I'll run it for 3-4 days straight. Other than that, on hot days I'll turn it on when we start getting ready for bed, and turn it off in the morning.

I just looked it up, gas + electric for all of 2022 was a smidge over $2,000. I can afford that.

Man. That was almost 120 years ago. Most of the place would have been using the gasworks and oil lamps.

Until this last year, my heat was 67-68 during the winter. The hike in gas has now made 65 degrees the new magic number.

Cuz sleeping in a tent sucks. I'm at an age where I need comfort and convenience. To a degree.

heating is via propane. 1399 for last tank fill, about 6-8 weeks of propane.

700 kwh/ month on the average. Doesn't vary much during the year, cuz I use dino-power for heat, and don't need AC in the summer.

In the summer around 3600kw in the winter closer to 1500kw- 2k kw…my power rate in Houston is currently locked in at 8.8cents per kw

Thats working from home and running 3units totaling 10 tons of A/C and two pool pumps. I did have the house spray foamed a few years back that made a nice difference,

About 400kWh electric, and about 150ccf because gas heat. Total over $ 300 for one month, although I just switched electric providers, so that should go down a bit, and hopefully a bit more as I turned down the heat to 62. This is ridiculous. Energy prices for my home combined electric and gas have literally doubled. Brandon's anti oil and gas policies are really helping out!

Our house really must be as stated above, shit on the efficiency graph....sad to learn.

It's a 300 year old stone building with plenty of drafts and a cold foundation of stone. I'm going to start at the top in the attic and try to button up things around here.

Thanks for the posts to all.

You shop rate providers? I do "fixed rate" and 12 month term. Right now my electric is about $150 a month ( used the lathe a fair amount plus welding )

Heat is oil and coal with a small propane heater on a thermostat for the addition.

sorry, 700 is my rough averager. here in pa, dec, jan and feb are a little tough, then july and august. the remainder months are very mild in comparison.

my electric usage last month was 189 bucks and change. peco generation, transmission and usage is a total of 17.5 cents per kw i think. so, december to january 15th was roughly 1100 kw.

Some friends left the Wash DC burbs for a YEUGGE ~7000' 3 story MANSION in western Virginia, up in the mountain regions......their electric ran some 900/month....serious.....

SO the went solar with a YEUGGE array facing south on a hillside....dropped the bill down to 200/month.......paid like 65 grand for the install.....

Your relative in NC must be served by Duke Energy, which I was before I sold the house last year. They have a good number of nukes and they run them very efficiently.

Here in the mountains our supplier is TVA and our costs are basically double.
