I just spoke with the contractor who owns the equipment. The neighbor rented the small backhoe from them. Then they had to bring out the heavy equipment to get it out. So not only does he have to pay for renting the small backhoe, but now the cost of getting it out. Then as if that all isnt bad enough, the contractor said the small backhoe got water in the engine block. Bet he wishes he would have hired a company to do that sea wall now....

They're loading up the big CAT and have to come back for the smaller one. They had to remove the shovel and arm just to get it out because the shovel was so stuck in the muck.

Sad part is, he hasnt learned his lesson. The contractor said he still plans on finishing it himself. Dont know who is gonna rent him equipment again...

What are the design, approval and inspection requirements for a seawall? I would think that gets into wetlands law and other fun stuff that a DIY-er has no clue about. If that stuck excavator leaked any oil, antifreeze, etc. there are state and federal reporting requirements that probably didn't happen.

This is one of those projects where calling The Guy is the right answer.

Because it's on the water doesn't mean it is "wetlands". Matter of fact, most waterfront is not "wetlands".

Yeah, I know, and there are different legal definitions of wetlands, waterways, and other such things, all with different laws and reporting requirements. I know enough to know I don't know enough to attempt a project like that myself.

I dont know if he pulled a permit or not. I know I had to get approval and permits from DMR before I could even hire a company to do my seawall.

Well they sent in another flatbed and small crane to pick up and remove the backhoe. I hate to see the bill for all this....

He obviously didn't learn his limitations.
