Default Watch Guys - question

I'm still going through some of my father's old possessions since we lost him a couple years ago. Dad had a thing for watches, nothing fancy. No Rolex or equivalent, just not him as he grew up in Nazi occupied Holland during the war where he learned what it was like to have nothing so spending thousands on a watch would never happen.

I did find this 1971 Seiko 6139 Speed Timer which turns out to be a fairly significant watch. I'm going to go ahead and have it restored as a keepsake and hand it down to my son. I've seen values all over the place for this thing, anyone here have any experiences with these and knows about what it may REALLY be worth?

Sorry for you loss. That said, StorytellerStealth is a watch guru but is currently on the road headed to Las Vegas.
One of my best friends was in line for his grandfather's Rolex, but the step-mom had it strapped to his dad's wrist at the burial. 95 years of being a family treasure to 'poof' by one act of stupidity.

If I ever have a question about dad's crap saver he'll be the first guy I reach out to.

Thanks, saw a couple others that had it over $2K as well and some under $500 so who knows. I guess it doesn't matter, I would still spend a grand to restore a $500 watch that belonged to the old man I guess.

Speaking of dad trinkets, this one may interest some here, not sure there are many soccer fans here but it's kinda cool. Coming from Holland, dad was big into soccer and played in some amateur leagues before becoming a referee. He progressed through high school and college and became an MLS official for many years. When he could no longer run the field they made him the senior assessor of officials and he trained and assessed the referees in the league. When he was forced to give it up due to his health they presented him with a gold whistle and had this piece commissioned for him as he was from Phoenix and was almost always seen in a bolo tie. This thing is platinum, gold and turquoise inlays on a silver base and was appraised at a little over $5K a couple years ago. This was his most prized possession and he wore it everywhere, so much so that I need to have it restored as well. He even wore it in their last portrait, they were both gone within about 6 months of this photo. Any who, just thought it was interesting.

Is it in as good condition as it looks in the picture? That and if no parts are missing off of it make a big difference in what it is worth. How nice is the bracelet? Keep in mind the bracelets were janky when they were new.

I have one my jeweler sourced for me that I am deciding who to have service it. They can be tricky to work on.

Cool piece. Nice provenance
Make sure whoever you have service it is actually able to work on that

It's in pretty good shape and I think polishing will do the trick but it does need a bezel. Nothing is missing and it still has the original bracelet, nothing fancy and kind of cheapens the watch in my mind. That's the one thing I would like to get upgraded. I think the works will need to be cleaned up as well as a couple of the buttons are stuck.

A watch like that is priceless.

But, if you need to provide a value for insurance purposes, higher is better.

Cool old Seiko!

I can't place a value but you might try this question on the Rolex Forum (there are sections other than Rolex). I'd research the watch BEFORE doing anything to it! And even then I'd try to have it serviced without polishing or changing out original parts.....That means just clean it, make it function properly and wear it. The memory is in the worn look. as it is now.....

I just took a quick look on TRF, there's plenty of information to help you learn what you have there. It's a cool watch!

Go to the Seiko section search 6139
