Default Murrah Bombing OKC, 25 yrs

Every year, as the anniversary comes around, we relive the horrific events of that day, but we also get to rejoice in the resilience, compassion and unity of the people of Oklahoma.

A dear friend that was in the water resources building, across the street from the federal building, she was injured but thankfully survived. 168 souls sadly did not.

We will never forget.

If you are ever in OKC, I highly recommend visiting the memorial. Amazingly peaceful and beautiful place to forever honor those lost.

Same. I’ll never forget thinking if I could hear and feel the explosion miles away, what it must have been like for those at the site.

To know those that planned it were aware there was a daycare in the building, is something I cannot even fathom. Pure evil.

That was a very sad day indeed for this country, taking of kids lives just having a day at daycare. True cowards those fuks were, I hope they rot in satans bowels for eternity.

Never been to that city but definitely want to visit the memorial one day.

That's what made "collateral damage" a household phrase.

I remember it well. May the victims rest in peace and be blessed by God. I think a lot of people was surprised when they realized it was a American christian guy that did it.

1995 was the year we left Illinois and moved to California. We drove through OKC on the way.

Good thing he didn't put up much of a fight to appeal his death sentence.

McVeigh was from this area, attached article in today's newspaper on his father.

"William "Bill" McVeigh, father of Timothy McVeigh, at his home in Pendleton 25 years after his son bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Timothy McVeigh, who killed 168 people, was executed for his crimes in 2001."

Read the following book on McVeigh 6 months ago, it was a good read.

American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing

Odd thing is I remember watching documentaries on this and the domestic terrorist was credited with the first kill in a Bradley during the Gulf War, IIRC.

Other than knowing he was obsessed with the raid in Waco, I don’t know much about his history.

Kids died in that raid as well. I cannot wrap my mind around innocent babies in the middle of conflict they know nothing of and die as a result.

My office was six blocks directly north of the Murrah building. I had an appointment that I was going to that morning that required me driving towards the Murrah building. I was driving to my appointment and was three blocks directly north of the Murrah building when the bomb exploded.

I was driving a four wheel drive pick up and had just gone through an intersection with a traffic light. The light was green in my direction and there was no traffic around me. The bomb exploded as I was driving through the intersection. There as so much force that pick up lifted off of the pavement like I had hit a curb at 30 mph. I thought someone ran into me, and I said to myself "I never say the guy". I stopped the truck and was looking in the direction of the Murrah building and everything was happening in slow motion just like in a war movie. I am not making that up or exaggerating the event. But I remember seeing glass being blown out of the buildings and people running out of the building in slow motion.

After several seconds I started driving south again towards the Murrah building because I had no clue to what had happened. I pulled up to the intersection that the Murrah building was down from. I looked directly at the Murrah building and saw the north face of the building completely blown off the building. I remember saying to myself " a lot of people just died". It was horrific to say the least.

I had never smelled death before, but for the next several days I could smell it from my office six blocks away. I imagine that is what a battle zone smells like. There were ambulances lined up the street from the Murrah building to my office building for several days. The FBI used a large auditorium that was in my office building for a couple of weeks.

The company I have worked for now for twenty three years helped lead the recovery effort by supplying equipment and manpower to shore up the building and remove debris. The company spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in those efforts. And when the federal government called the owner of the company to ask him to send an bill for the efforts, he said he would not dream of charging a dime for the work. The company received lots of recognition in the media, magazines, etc. Some of those items of recognition are in the lobby of our OKC office. It includes a letter from President Clinton and Governor Keating.

The stories I have been told about the recovery efforts were both gruesome and touching.

I will always remember that day like it was yesterday.

Wow, I had no idea you were that close when the bomb went off.

This truly is something that will never be forgotten, for some horrific reasons but mostly because of who we are as a community.

I had only lived here a few years at that time, after that event, as well as a few of the catastrophic tornadoes, I accepted this was a special place with special people.
