Did a Cat 3 in the Bode Island Lighthouse once. Not without worry even though it had 5 foot thick stone walls. Storm lasted all night. Next day after the winds stopped howling I went up the stairs with another guy to get a view of the surroundings. There was a wooden door leading out to the catwalk. We thought we'd not go out there but just open the door and take a look from inside. When I turned the handle the door ripped out of the wall and sailed a quarter mile away. Lucky it didn't suck me out too. Holy crap!

Plenty of light rain here this morning. I got 25lbs of tomatoes so I am cooking them into marinara sauce today. Got nothing else to do.

Be safe all, especially those in the storm's path.

My youngest daughter is staying put in her apartment, southernmost I-75 exit in Collier, she says not ugly yet.

Bigger concern is the bro and his wife, they are in Cape Coral, on the water, dock with big boat, they are going to stay there, I warned him, but he knows better-always goes, hope he has a lot of luck on reserve.

11 AM Advisory has winds at 155 mph, only FOUR-yeah I did my research, hurricanes have hit land in THE USA at 155 or higher.

Appreciate the offer but, if the antiques are there count me out. Unless we can take them out for a boat ride

Planning ahead:

Utility trucks are staged in a rural lot in The Villages of Sumter County, Fla., Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022. Hurricane Ian rapidly intensified as it neared landfall along Florida's southwest coast Wednesday morning, gaining top winds of 155 mph (250 kph), just shy of the most dangerous Category 5 status. My daughter in East Naples is without power and without internet, she can only send texts.

I have no updates on my bro in Cape Coral, I told him not to call me if he dies in the flooding,,,

I know Steeb is trying to get home from Moab. Kathy said his flight is due in around 4:00 this afternoon. I plan to stay here.
Have a generator. The bar is stocked and plenty of food on hand.

Wild. If there is a bright spot, at least the bulk of the storm will be hitting during daylight hours.

Here is link for local Fox Channel, https://www.fox4now.com/ , home page has constant feed of field reporters and weather studio,,, now is about the time the storm gets ugly, as eye now touching coastline, most severe damage should be points north of Fort Myers.

Emergency response to natural disasters is hardly exclusive to Florida. You could see a similar response in any state in the union. I've seen it first hand. It's truly remarkable to see them in action.

Quote:
Mutual aid is electric utilities helping each other in times of need. The American Public Power Association, together with state and regional public power utilities and organizations, coordinates the mutual aid network for the nation’s public power utilities. Utilities that want to give and get help for power restoration after a disaster sign up for this network. When (and even before) a major disaster hits a utility’s territory and the utility knows that its own crews and equipment won’t be enough to restore power quickly, it calls for mutual aid. It provides its best estimate of how many people it needs and what type of skills they should have. The utility also specifies equipment and material needs. Other utilities in the network respond with what they can offer. The actual dispatch and movement of crews from different utilities is coordinated by utility and public power association personnel who volunteer as regional and national mutual aid coordinators.

Here in Oviedo, just north of UCF, we've had steady rain and some wind all morning. Winds are just beginning to pick up. I haven't heard or seen a bird in three days. Haven't heard a bug noise, and heard a single frog a little while ago. My Grandfather used to say the quieter the animals, the more you need to take it serious.

While it's slated to be a Tropical Storm when it passes here, we get hurricane force weather when it's heading here. Microsoft hurricane center now shows the eye due to pass a mile away from our house. None of our neighbors are from Florida. Of the 7 houses on the street, only one other seems to have anybody home. ith 30 more miles to the East Coast, I'm not sure where they think is safer.
