Default Bucky's wife lost her horse yesterday :-(

Elisa has had Shadow for years and let me bring her and their other horse here 4 years ago when I lost my gelding so Dixie wouldn't be alone.

Shadow was ancient when she came here but oh-so-sweet (except for the first time she met my goats and tried to kill them).

Up until and all through Friday she was her usually chipper self. She ran this place. She wouldn't wander off, and if she did couldn't go anywhere, so I'd just let her wander free outside the pasture so she could eat the good grass. If she saw the gate open she expected to be able to walk through and if I put a halter on her she would be very insulted. I'd never let the other horses enjoy the same liberties, but Shadow was special.

I had a funny feeling when I went out the door yesterday morning. Sure enough, she was down and unable to get up. I called Bucky and Mrs. Threadkiller and our vet who all arrived at the same time. The decision to administer the pink stuff was an easy one, nobody wanted to see her suffer any longer than necessary.

She passed quickly and easily, then it was decided she's be burried in my pasture, where she belongs. Bucky rented an excavator and my husband borrowed our neighbors tractor. I tell you what, for an advertising executive and a software engineer, they sure dug one heck of a hole!

Even though it's been expected for years, it's still sad. I'm going to miss the old girl.

RIP Shadow sweetheart!

growing up we had an appaloosa horse that we inherited from an old farmer, was the same had the run of the place, never any problems or ran away. He was better trained then some of our dogs. to make a long story short i was in the service and was about to go home on leave when my father calls, the old horse had finely died. They would leave the horse out 24/7 in the summer unless there were storms. Well one morning he was banging on the kitchen window, mom opened window told him to go out in the fields which he did, couple mins later back at the window, mom thought he was just looking for his morning carrot treats. she goes out and gives him the treat, the horse ate it ,nozzeled her for a min then walks out to the field looks back at her ,whinies then sits/lays down and died .

Sorry for you loss

They can be amazingly intuitive.

It's good your mom didn't have to make the tough decision to put him down when his time came and it didn't sound like he suffered. Shadow suffered for a short time but it was a blessing that it was obviously her time to go and everybody got to love on her one more time, including her pasturemates. 

She was a sweet old horse.
We figure she was just over 30 years old. And we'd had her for about the last 15, the last few under BB's magnificent care. She taught a lot of kids to ride - my son, nephews, children of friends... She didn't get nutso or anything when somebody who had no clue climbed aboard.

She had one little quirk - she'd bite me anytime I saddled her. E didn't seem to have a problem but if it was me back there she'd blow up when I tightened the cinch and then when I tried to snug it up, i'd get nipped. I think she thought it was funny.

BB thanks for everything you have done for her and Red. You have a magical knack with animals and E, I and the critters all appreciate it.
