Costco has a surprisingly good selection of wines.

The wines my wife likes:

- 7 Deadly Zins
- Menage a trois

She loves the pinot noirs, but generally drinks whites during the summer. She's been drinking Cupcake (about 8.00/bottle at Costco).

Sutter Home produces some pretty good reasonably priced red wines in Napa, CA.

I've had the Sutter Home Merlot a couple of times. It's around $7/bottle... not bad. I can get about 2 days' worth out of one of those bottles.

Then you're not much of a drinker, friend. You need to start turning back those bottles until they bubble! Call me when you get up to 2 bottles a night, and we'll go drinkin'.

I've had cheap and not so cheap. Only one I can remember. Robert Mondavi 1997 Special Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. We had a bottle in Las Vegas that we paid $150 in 2000. We bought another bottle in 2005 for $200.
It was a special occasion and a very special wine.

I used to bartend at a place that had a very sophisticated wine clientele - they would tell you exactly how much ice to put in their Burgundy.

I've had $500 flights of wine and can't remember their names or taste. Seriously, I can probably name 10 wines by taste.

Beer, on the other hand.....

I have a wine-tasting contest format that I have done at many gatherings. I ask people to blind taste four or five wines ranging in price from $5 to $100, then rank the according to which is the most expensive. The $10-15 dollar stuff wins almost every time.

Another point that should be made in this thread is that when you purchase wine in a restaurant, you are usually paying 3X the retail price.

However, I have to say-the right Sommelier can make or break a dinner.

Just poured a little of the Franzia Merlot. It's actually not bad.

Good thing I don't have much of a palate for wines. I might have had to spring for something with a cork.

I also picked up a box of Oak Leaf Cabernet Sauvignon. It, too, is not bad.

You mean the restaurant is going to make a profit?!?! NOOOOoooooo...

Kinda what they are in business for, and I damn well know that I'm paying more for ANYTHING I drink in restaurant or bar.
