Would be nice to have an update. I'm sure someone has security cameras that captured something, at least we'd know the make and model of the car that dropped off the thief, and, while it may be too late now, I certainly would have tried the Onstar angle, calling them up and paying for a month of service just to see if they can find it.

I'm guessing this is one of the organized rings doing the thieving, so both of those would probably be dead ends, i.e. faces covered, car used either stolen or plates covered, etc. And they probably were smart enough to disable the Onstar antenna or power to the Onstar electronics.....but maybe not?

Just pulled up FLORIDA's sentencing guidelines for auto theft, I doubt if anyone spends a day in prison once the court case is pleaded down, and the suspect's unfortunate life is dramatized to the judge:

FLORIDA LAW
Motor Vehicle Theft (under $20,000): Felony in the Third Degree; up to 5 years in prison and/or fines up to $5,000.
Motor Vehicle Theft (between $20,000-$100,000): Felony in the Second Degree; up to 15 years in prison and/or fines up to $10,000.

And here is the law in kali, SO DAMN WEAK!!

4. Defenses to Grand Theft Auto

If the person taking the car did not intend to permanently take it from its true owner (or take the car for so long that the owner suffers a loss) then he or she would not be criminally liable under the grand theft auto statute. However, they still may be guilty of joyriding under California Vehicle Code 10851 VC. In addition, if the defendant had permission or consent to take the vehicle, he or she would not be guilty of grand theft auto.

5. Penalties

Grand theft auto is considered a “wobbler” offense that can be filed by prosecutors as either a felony or a misdemeanor. If filed as a felony, the maximum penalty one could receive is three years in prison. If charged as a misdemeanor, the maximum penalty is a year in jail. If the value of the vehicle stolen is above $65,000, an additional year in prison can be added to any sentence. You bring up a very helpful point! Air Tags are great. I put one in my glove box when I had my car shipped up here. I was able to track it every step of the way. If you have a vehicle of value or luggage you want to keep track of while it is en route, hide an Air Tag in it.

YOu also h ave to consider that in CA, nobody ever does the full sentence. Usually less than half. So a year sentence is more like 4 months. The illegal that was a repeat offender and had been deported prior who shot and killed the young Selma, CA police officer in an ambush had been let out of jail on a violent armed robbery and assault charge after serving something like 6 months out of his 5 year sentence. Face tats and all. They should have shot him the first time he snuck back into the US.
