Default And so the long jouney begins...

Some of you may recall that I posted earlier about planting a Giant Redwood tree in my front yard:

They grow almost 300' tall and have a diameter of 20'-26'. They are the fastest growing conifers on Earth; during their 3rd year they grow 4', and their growth rate increases each year. They put on growth rings of one inch per year. That would increase the trunk diameter by 2 inches per year. At that rate you could expect the tree to have a trunk diameter of 20 inches in its 10th year, 60 inches in its 30th year, 100 inches in its 50th year, and 200 inches in its 100th year. 200 inches is nearly 17 feet in trunk diameter.

That would put me only about 159-years-old, so it's doable....

Here's what it looks like today (about 10" tall):

Wish me luck!

Just out of curiousity, how big an area are you planting this in? How close to any plumbing lines, underground utulities etc?

My front yard is approx. 6 acres. The distance from the road to my house is 600, so the tree, even it at 270' won't hit anything if it falls. The only thing buried in the front yard is my water line, but I can avoid it by 200'. BTW, Redwood tree roots are very soft and delicate, so I doubt that their roots would harm anything even if they touched something.

The root system of the Redwood tree is surprisingly shallow, especially given the great height the mature tree attains. There is no tap root and the other roots may reach no deeper than 6-12 feet. The major roots are about 1 inch in diameter. and they typically spread 50 to 80 feet.

Well it looks like you have done your research. One other question...how will you get Annie down out of it?

Did I ever tell you about Annie's claws??? When I pick her up every morning to put her outside, a few minutes later my hands are bleeding. Her damned claws are so sharp that you don't feel them sticking you.

So if Annie climbs the Redwood tree...tough titties!

Our smaller Tonkinese is like that. Her front claws are like needles. When I go to bed at night she always jumps up on the bed and wants me to pet her. She will grab my hand with her paws and the next day I see these little holes and blood spots. I have learned that it is better to leave a hand out from under the covers since if she cant find a hand she will come up and tag my face

Annie sometimes gets under the bed covers with me, ostensibly to snuggle. Instead she attacks my arm (bites, scratches), then runs away. Big feckin' fun....

They would not. About the only trees that survive hurricanes are Bald Cypress; their roots extend 60'+ from the trunk.
