Credible forums DO NOT DO THIS but we are not talking about credible now are we. Everything done on high end forums IS saved in a database and can be viewed by Admins only but in regards to PM'S (It is not legal to view a member's pm not addressed to the site or an Admin directly). The below hack was developed some time ago and you can get the picture of how this has allowed everyone to abuse the privacy issue. I myself would never read a PM on my site not sent to me directly but can bet this isnt followed by CF or IB.

Admins can view user's PM's

Mod Version: 1.00, by Scott MacVicar (Coder

After some requests and a debate in the requests forum I've finally finished the majority of this hack. It allows the admin to find a user via the current method in the control panel then click view user's pm's. They are then shown all the pm's in the users folders.

Includes admin logging and is designed to use the cp.css file which is already used by the control panel. I considered adding a search feature but it would be hard without indexing all of the pm's the way vBulletin already does. This means it would be a very limited search.
You can also now select which admins can view user pm's this is done the same way that restriction to the adminlogging is done, the variable is at the top of pm.php

This hack involves uploading pm.php to the admin directory then following the instructions which requires you adding the two links within /admin/user.php

Not only were mine read, many were deleted by an Admin over at the CF.

The PM's from Jessie telling me not to compete against St. Judes with my NCM auctions all were deleted. Dumb ass didn't know I had already printed hard copies.

They also deleted a few PM's from vendors offering free items to auction off for the NCM. The NCM lost out on thousands of dollars because of that.

This after I personally donated auction items and collected over $3,000 for St. Judes.

Have you shown all of this to the people at the NCM?

In the United States law gives specific exceptions on when private communications can be intercepted and reviewed. The basics of which can be read here:

Privacy - Internet Law

Of course, the administrator/owner of a forum can simply rename Private Messaging and disclose in their terms of service that it is subject to review. Than the user doesn't have any expectation of privacy using the service.

Does anyone know if IB/CF have such items stated in their terms of service?
This has now got me thinking and could be interesting.

I understand; I just assume pretty much any and everything online can be read, so it's not a big deal to me. If I'm going to rip a mod or admin on a forum, I'll do it to them, not behind the scenes in a PM in the first place.

It's not that I'm paranoid, it's just that they're out there. All the time. Watching. lol

This has now got me thinking and could be interesting.
I had a lawyer look over what I had, he brought in an internet specialist and told me there would be a digital finger print of who ever deleted the PM's.

It was their opinion that because I had paid for my membership as a lifetime supporter, this put me in a different category than the members who use the site for free. If the messages are listed as private, as they are on the forum, then the users have a right to expect privacy in the communication.

He told me I had a case but that there was no case history for this kind of law. Were I to sue, it would be a long drawn out affair and he wanted $100K up front. He told me we may or may not recoup that, we could potentially get a lot more. Since what was done was criminal, there could even be an arrest made.

I thought about it and told him I didn't want to spend the money and he gave me a POC at the FBI for internet crimes. Told me I should at least file a complaint with them for going through my PM's.

The statue of limitations is a long way off, I still haven't decided my final course of action.

I would file a report at least. Just so there is some background if there is another case reported/filed.

Just my 2 cents and that will get you a moderation session and a permaban....your choice

I got banned over there too (johncbourg), but to be honest I did spam them just for spite.

After I saw what those jerkoffs did to JPM, I figured it was time.

I had been banned over there 4x, and censored 2x, and put on probation 2x also. CF sucks now.

This was my final nail
