I've often thought about that while sitting at a crossing. That is not gonna be fun to clean up.

I saw an engine mid train in the derailment. (southbound video ) That must have been one hell of an experience for the folks in there.

When I was a kid my mom used to always stay way back at railroad crossings. I remember her telling me a story about when she was a kid she was with her parents at a RR crossing and the train derailed. The cars teepee'd up in the air and tipped over to the opposite crossing from then. That was why she stayed back.

Couple of possibilities. The 27th car in the train is the first one to derail. If you don't want to count, it is the first white car after the two red ones that goes behind the left crossbuck at :35 into the video. See the back bouncing as it goes through the crossing?

My thoughts are either that car had a mechanical defect (thin wheel flange, for example) or less likely (since the other cars rolled smoothly through the crossing in front of and behind the index car until everything went south) something on the track or a broken rail. More likely:

That is a "pusher" unit. it is not occupied, but rather controlled remotely from the lead engines. 52 cars is a lot less than I would normally associate with the use of a pusher unit so it may not have been running. If it was, it might have gotten out of synch with the lead units and resulted in pushing the cars between it and the lead unit together. If it did this hard enough it can cause cars in the middle to jump off the rails. I think this was the issue, but we will see what the investigators find.

To add to your reasons it’s possible that car had a sticking brake earlier and build up tread on the wheel which would cause the wheel to bounce. Then when it hit the crossing which is smoothed over for road traffic on the bounce the flange was high enough to leave the rail.
