Default Question: Transmission rebuild done but making whining sound

Cliffs:

Trans on Explorer blew
Took to local shop - they rebuild.
Say it will take a week.
After two weeks, I pay for it on credit card
I don't get out of the lot - problems
They have it another two weeks - fire employee who worked on it.
Rebuild it again.
Pick up today - no codes but making a whining sound.
They say "Drive it and see if it goes away - might be tight belts"

Tomorrow morning I'm going to call the bank and do a chargeback on the card. Even though they keep saying "If you have a problem, bring it back..." this has been very disruptive.

Juggling work, school, wife, doctors appointments etc. with one, two seat car has had a real cost. I've had to put off important meetings, we can't go anywhere as a family.

When it's fixed I'll pay. Am I right? Seems like they should give me a rental.

A chargeback may be bad if they will even do it. Read the paperwork you signed very carefully before the work began. Sounds like they could be covering up a big mistake also and ttrying to get away with it.

PS, didn't the Explorer get the nickname the "Exploder" because the trans had a history of grenading?

Its like this..and I hate the 'Shop' mentality ...They fk your shit up..whatever it may be, then they want you to bring it back so they can fix it.

So lets see..they fked your shit up twice and they want you to keep bringing it back until they can get it right.

I fkn hate that shit..if you cant fix my shit the first time, then you, or your shop, sucks asshole and you arent touching my shit ever again.

Being a helicopter mechanic I fully agree. I don't get the option to feck shit up period and then hand it over to the customer. And you can bet you ass I go up on every post maintenance flight on the aircraft I just worked on as my insurance to the customer everything is golden. 20 years, I'm still around.

They do, thats why I was asking the year.

Early '90's trannies have a horrid reputation for failures. They beefed them up in '95 and put a new engine and tranny design in them in '97.

I thought it was due to the fuel pump starting fires and having the gas tank go boom.

2002 4X4 - V8 - tow package (has a trans cooler). 106K miles.

It will be up to the bank to decide whether to charge back the transaction. I have a very good relationship with the bank (local credit union).

Bottom line is: They've had 2X and 4 weeks to repair it and they ain't getting it done. Plus the E-brake is now busted for some reason. WTF? It's worse than it was before.

I will still negotiate with the repair shop - but I want my money in my control. I'm hoping it will get their attention.

How long does it really take to pull an automatic trans? 1 hr? 2hrs max.

Why does it take 2 weeks? They need to fix it in a day. With an hour out and an hour in, that leaves 6 hours to resolve the issue.

Not heard of that. It was a tire problem plus people who can't drive.

Next time I'll test the vehicle before paying. These guys have done work for me before with no issues. Lesson learned.

How long does it really take to pull an automatic trans? 1 hr? 2hrs max. Being a 4x4 takes longer. IMHO, 4 hours to pull, 4 hours to replace. Rebuild time varies but should be less than a day, two days if they need to order parts.

Unless its a M22, the tranny should never whine. There are issues and it could be anything from a bad torque converter, metal to metal on one of the clutch packs to an alignment issue with the transfer case. There are 4 major bearings in your year of transmission, hopefully, they replaced them.

Either way, its not right and will probably soon be undrivable.

Good luck, hope it works out in your favor.

Might take it to a transmission shop and get their opinion for some ammunition for your case

After talking to the credit card company, I need to get a second opinion. But I'm pretty sure it will require pulling it again and some level of disassembly.

What a hassle. May have to rent a car. More $$$$. My bung is starting to hurt.

Pete, many auto trannies have a certain whine to them.....almost normal....

but not knowing about that one, I can't say for sure.....it's called 'planetary' whine...almost sound clean like a audio oscillator sine wave....but varies with speed of car and gears/shifting/relaxing the gas pedal....

long as the thing upshifts firmly and downshifts good when slowing down, and he fluid is RED not brown....you should be ok.....

but like I say, #1 IM not there to listen to it, and maybe it is a sign of trouble on that tranny.....

but then again, after working in the public/retail/remodeling/mechanic sector for decades, I used to hearing whining.....

It's not that noise. It's a bad noise. I just got back from Ford dealer. The first thing they did was sniff under the hood. It's burning fluid. Thinks it's a bad torque converter. They did vouch for the original shop that did it - saying they usually do great work. In fact, they often send stuff back and forth.

I can't check the fluid because it's a sealed trans. (great idea Ford...).

The Ford dealer said to take it back to the original guys - then have them send it to the dealer on their dime.

But no question: it's a bad sound.
