It's hard to tell from the video where exactly the plane impacted relative to the seating. That photo looks like a direct hit on the seating, though. Apex's video is the closest perspective I've seen (and the sound in the video will make your heart skip a beat).

Update: Death Toll at 9 Following Tragic Reno Air Races Crash

Reno PD says the death toll as it stands is 9 including the pilot, Jimmy Leeward.

According to the Reno Police Department 54 patients were transferred to area hospitals Friday: 2 dead, 7 killed instantly, 17 still being treated and a total of 24 have been treated and released.

A damaged elevator trim tab was discovered among the wreckage after a P-51 Mustang nose-dived into spectators at the annual National Championship Air Races in Reno.

NTSB would not admit that the damaged elevator trim found came from the Galloping Ghost or if it was the direct cause of the crash.

"We do not speculate," says NTSB representative. "We are here to investigate."

As to whether the pilot's age, 74, and health is considered a factor, NTSB says all of that will be examined throughout the course of the investigation and is being considered.
